Can I use a external HD for a back-up and still add to it?

I am looking to back up/system image a computer onto my external 1TB HD but I want to be able to add more files to it keeping the system image and backed up files in tact. Can I create a different directory and use that for additional files or will it not recognize the drive if I needed to re-image the hard drive?

You should be able to with no problem.
