Solved Can I use same repair disc created w Ultimate on Professional?

I have a laptop with Windows 7 Professional and a desktop with Windows 7 Ultimate. They have the same programs installed...sometimes I work from the desktop, sometimes from the laptop. I just created an image file of my desktop (Windows 7 Ultimate) C: drive (which is SSD) and a corresponding repair disc...
And now Im wondering...if my laptop ever crashed, could I use the repair disc created on my Ultimate install? (my laptop's C: is Win 7 Professional, on a mechanical HDD, and the repair disc was created for an install of Win 7 Ultimate on SSD)

Hello Orlando, and welcome to Seven Forums.

As long as the Windows 7 Professional on your laptop is also 64-bit, then you can use the System Repair Disc that you created on your 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate desktop to do the System Image Recovery with.

If the laptop is 32-bit, then you will not be able to a 64-bit System Repair Disc on it. Instead, you would have to create one a 32-bit Windows 7.

Hi Brink! Thanks for the reply! Just a little detail I want to make sure you didnt overlook in my setup... one setup is SSD and the other is HDD. Reason I bring this to your attention is because when I created my image file for the setup with SSD, it only had C: drive partition indicated as being backed up...while another partition called "System Information" is included (approx 100MB) when saving an image that is installed on non-SSD. So thats one reason Im wondering if it would work...because in the SSD image, there is no such "System Information" partition available/visible when backing up, and this may be something the mechanical hard drive would be looking for? Can you please clarify so that I may fully understand...?

It doesn't matter what the System Repair Disc was created on as long as it's the same 64-bit or 32-bit as the Windows that you are using it on. The only thing that would matter to do the System Image Recovery is the System Image backup itself.

OK, this has brought up further questions for me...

1. If I do a recovery on my laptop (which had Win 7 Pro) using the repair disc made with Ultimate, does this not mean that after recovery, my laptop will now be running Ultimate?

• Although most of the programs on desktop are same as laptop, some versions may be different due to updates, or a few extra programs may be installed on the desktop that were not on the laptop... does this mean that when I do a recovery of the laptop using the repair disc made on the desktop, that the programs absent from the laptop will now appear to be installed, and if more recent versions of programs existed on the desktop, these more recent versions will now also be on the laptop?

The 100MB partition you refer to is probably a system reserved and if it is included in the image then it will be restored.
If you are asking can you reimage your laptop running Window Professional with an image made from your desktop running Ultimate? Then only if you uninstall/deactivate your Desktop Ultimate. 1 PC = 1 License.

No to both. A System Repair Disc is not a system image.

A system image recovery will only restore whatever was on the system image that you selected to restore to the HDD.

Simple terms, you could use my 64-bit System repair disc to get to the System Recovery Options but to only restore an Image for that particular PC.

OK so ideally, make 2 images (1 for the laptop and 1 for the desktop).
Can use either 64-bit system to create the repair disc that will work for both.

Yes, it would be recommended to make images for both to have one for each.

If the laptop is also 64-bit, then yes.
