This is really strange. None of my browsers will load walmart.com or target.com on my laptop via my wireless connection at home. I can connect a Verizon MiFi and connect fine. 3 other computers using the same connection have no issues. Every other site I have tried connects with no issue. With these, I get no response. Not even a 404 error, just a white background in the browser. I have done the following:
ran anti-spyware
ran virus checks
ran malware checks
flushed DNS
reset modem and router
checked hosts file
ipconfig /release /renew

Any ideas?

Sometimes it is the fault of the website. To test, take computer, go to a place that has WI FI and test. If you still cannot access, then it is most likely the website.

I used a mifi from Verizon, which is a wireless connection. That worked fine. It is only my home network that is the issue. I even connected directly to the modem with no success. That should eliminate the router. With 3 other pcs on the same home network connecting to those sites and mine not, it doesn't make much sense. Especially since it is only if I go through the modem to access them.

Firewall disabled?

Okay so you've reset router, checked hosts, tried different browsers, temporarily disabled firewall and confirmed that an image from the website will load but not the website itself.

Do you have any webrep plugins or ip adress blocking software?

Site is clean. Certificate doesn't match domain name. That shouldn't prevent you from accessing the site.

No and no. And wouldn't this affect access from another point? It's only my home network that seems to be the issue.

Ip address blocking

Well I get exactly the same results if I block using Peerblock (ip address block list software)

If blocked then I see a white background, no text and no error message.

I haven't loaded anything like that, either app or plugin. I checked the plugin list on Firefox and chrome just to be sure, and I haven't used IE but maybe twice in the last 6 months.

Try a different DNS provider

See if using another DNS lookup provider yields the same results:

Usually switching off the router and the computer is required for settings to take effect.

Typing the ip address in worked (could've sworn I tried that before). What would be the cause? I changed it to Google public DNS and both sites loaded. No reboot of either laptop or router, either.

HOSTS file?

Typing the ip address directly into the browser address bar gets around any restrictions in the HOSTS file so that's where I'd look.

Are you using a default hosts file or a modified one?

The default, and it was one of the first things I checked. No problems there. I'm thinking of downloading OpenDNS or something similar just in case

Does it begin with?

The default, and it was one of the first things I checked. No problems there. I'm thinking of downloading OpenDNS or something similar just in case

Does it look exactly like this?

Code:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#	127.0.0.1 localhost
#	::1             localhost

If so - uncomment

# 127.0.0.1 localhost

so that it reads:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Edit -forgot to metion

I'm forgetting that for some users Hosts file changes don't take effect until you close your browser and cut then re-enable your internet connection. (Switch off network adapter or reboot)
