Can you get viruses using Webmail?

Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to get viruses just by opening an email in webmail (such as Yahoo Mail or GMail), or if you would have to download the attachments.

I was under the impression that if there were any viruses in your webmail account, they couldn't harm your computer unless you downloaded them.

Using a good Antivirus program helps. NIS2012, G-Data or ESET are pretty good,
