can you run one network switch off of another network switch??

i have a 20mt ethernet cable going from my router along my loft to my gaming room to which it plugs into a network switch with 6 sockets for devices.
Can i run another switch off of one of the plugged in cables to split another cable into 6 ports?

The reason i ask is i need ethernet connections the other side of the room and dont fancy running any more cables under the carpet as i already have 3 computers and a server networked under it as it is

Hello,

Yes there will be no problems with linking two switches together . Just use one of the existing switch ports to link in the new switch. Another alternative would be to install a new switch with higher capacity (24-Ports).

It can be done, but i don't recommend it at all. The longer and more spread out your cables are, the less bandwidth you will recieve. This also depends on how much you recieve to begin with.

For a network as small as this I dont think you would notice much of a difference in regards to bandwidth.

As long as the network cable isnt over 100m then you should have a good enough connection.

I would suggest that you keep any servers and main PCs on one switch as this will have a slightly better speed when transfering files etc.

cheers guys i will only be running a NAS storage system and my gaming rig. High Transfer speeds aren't a must, as i will use hot swap drives to transfer the bulk of the data back and forth. As long as each device gets a usable internet connection and the means to transfer files im happy.
