Cannon PIXMA MX870

I am trying to network (hardwire) my Canon PIXMA MX870 and I can't get my son's laptop (Satellite L505D-S5983) to install the drivers from the printers disc. The install goes about half way and then error comes up and the disc prompts you to start over. The only thing I could find on the laptop is a windows update KB977074 that never installed and also fails every time my son tries to update. My sons laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. When I go to network I can see the cannon printer but it says memory and share but does not give any option to use as a printer. Is there a way to use w/o the drivers or any way to install the drivers? Thanks in advance for any help on getting the drivers installed on my son's laptop.

Have you tried the drivers from the Canon site?http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mx_series/pixma_mx870#DriversAndSoftware

Some times they are more up to date and will install. Just select windows Seven Operating System and save to desktop.
Once you have what you need saved extract if needed then run the setup.exe files.Also make sure to set it as your default printer.

Thanks. Tried this but still no luck and reason why I think the update might be the reason to my problem.
