Cannot access file on old XP drive

I am trying to access an old laptop drive via a disc drive cradle plugged into a Windows 7 computer via USB 3.0. The drive was from an old XP machine.

The lap top drive folder structure pops up in Windows Explorer when I plug it into the cradle. I am trying to access the the Users folder to get some of my old files. When I click on it I am prompted that I don't have access rights to the data and to click continue to access the data. When I do this windows Explorer locks up.

What can I do? I still have the old Password but I am not being prompted for it.

Could I block clone the data and try it that way?

Use a linux live OS and access XP drive. You should able to access data without any iusse.

This issue is due to the fact that although you may have the same username as before Windows sees each user name as a unique reference, (the SID Number )

Go to the root of the drive, or the Users folder, right click select properties then security, next add your current username to the list of users and give it full control, allow this to cascade down the file tree. If you get an error (other than with system files like the recycle bin or similar) then ok this and repeat the process from this point ( this tends to happen when existing permission get complex.

The other way is to Take Ownership of the drive or parts that you require access to, or you could,

Also If you can see the folders Copy these to the new drive as copy replaces old NTFS rights with those of the new location, whilst Move moves the files and rights

BTW, the user name and password would only be asked for if you were connecting to the old drive in a computer via a network
