Cannot change from standard VGA driver on Windows 7

I have been recommended to change from my standard VGA driver to a genuine one for my HD 3450. I have downloaded the driver from the website, installed it, and it still thinks I am using the standard VGA driver. This is exceedingly annoying, even disabling the VGA driver in device manager does not work.

Did the ATI driver install properly? What is listed under Display Adapters in device manager? If your motherboard has onboard video make sure it is disabled and you 3450 is selected. Monitor connected to the 3450?

In device manager it says that it's the VGA adapter, and I am positive I installed it properly. I used a link provided by someone off this forum, that may be the problem.

If it lists standard VGA adapter for video its only using the basic Windows supplied video driver. Does your motherboard have onboard video? If yes did you set the BIOS to use the add-in card (3450)? Is your monitor connected to the 3450? Please don't take that last question the wrong way but I have run into the odd person that didn't know you had to move the video cable. Now I ask just to make sure. Did you download the driver from ATI/AMD? What happens when you run the install?

I just tried installing that latest software, and nothing happened again. I checked under device manager, and it's still just the VGA adapter. This is a pretty old mother-board, with the best graphics card that can possibly go inside. Un-fortunately this problem is making games un-playable.

Your card AGP or PCI-E?

I'm pretty sure it's AGP, as it's an old mo-bo.

If it is AGP then this is the driver you need,

AMD Catalyst

Also what is the make and model of the motherboard, as you also need a working AGP driver (part of the chipset drivers, and not part of the video card driver) for the video card driver to install and work properly.

I got a HD 4670 AGP working by using the catalyst 10.7 I downloaded from here (its own manufacturer's site has saved an old catalyst version and it saved my backside as the one stormy posted didn't work back then), used the same installers successfully with other oldish ATI cards on AGP as well, so it's worth a try if you didn't manage to work with the link posted by stormy.

10-7_agp-hotfix_vista_32_dd_ccc

should be the file you need to download.
