My HP Pavilion Entertainment Laptop Model dv6602 au on a broadband cable cannot connect to the Internet. The cable is directly connected to ethernet port on laptop.
When I connect the cable to the wireless router - my laptop gets connected to the Internet but if I want to use the cable directly to my laptop - it does not.
If I connect the same cable to other laptops - the broad band connection works but not on my laptop.
Could it be possible that the ethernet port may have got damaged on my HP laptop? Please advise some remedy.

I don't know enough about laptops but is it possible that at present it is connecting via the wireless setting on the laptop ? You did say it would connect to the Internet but not when using the cable. What happens if you turn the wireless off on the laptop will it connect via the cable then ?

As already mentioned My Laptop does connect to the internet through wireless router. But it does not connect when I put the cable directly into the Laptop.
When I turn off the router - the connection gets disconnected immediately. The braoad band cable is connected to the router ethernet port when I am connected via Wireless Router.
The problem is with my Ethernet Port in the Laptop.

I didn't mean turning the router off, as far as I know there are switches on a laptop that are for turning the wireless on and off. As I said I don't know enough about laptops as I've never had one.

Have you tried another cable ? I don't understand what you mean by this, "The braoad band cable is connected to the router ethernet port when I am connected via Wireless Router"

You are saying that when you put 1 end of the cable into the Ethernet port on the router and the other end of the cable into the Ethernet port on your laptop it doesn't work but when you have no cable connected you can connect via Wireless to your router.

Have you had a look in Device Manager to see if there are any problems flagged with your Ethernet ?

Check in your BIOS and enable the Ethernet Card.

Check in Device manager whether the Ethernet Card is enabled and working. (not showing red or yellow symbols). Is the driver for ethernet card installed?

Go to Control Panel - Network and Sharing Center - Change Adaptor Settings. Can you locate your ethernet card here?

Select your network card - right click on it and select properties. Do you see the followig items selected?

Client for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol version 4(TCP/Ipv4)

Double click on Internet Protocol and make sure you have the following selected.

Obtain IP address automatically
Obtain DNS server address automatically

After connecting the ethernet cable, open CMD prompt.

Check whether you have IPs assigned to your ethernet card by the command
C:>\ipconfig /all

If you are not getting an automatic IP from the DHCP server, you can manually assign the values for

IP address
Subnet Mask
DNS server IP address
Default Gateway

in the Internet Protocol section of network card properties.

Once you check all these sections, try pinging a website and check whether you get a response or not.

These are the settings to be checked for getting internet on a computer.

I have tried everything as suggested but no solution till now. Also formatted C Drive in anticipation that the OS may have corrupted but that too did not solve the problem. I can ping 127.0.0.1 which shows ok.
Clueless till now.

Is there any particular reason you want to connect your laptop to the broad band connection through a cable only?

Do you have a wireless router? If you have one then you can connect the wireless router to the broadband cable and connect to it wirelessly and have internet access on your laptop.

I am presently connected to the internet through Wireless router. The reason for connecting through the cable is that I have taken one new connection from the ISP which has very high speed (10 Mbps). We do not have two wireless routers with us neither we intend to purchase one. Therefore we want to use one Ethernet Port on our laptop to use the any of the two connections that we have.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
thanks

please post ouput of IPCONFIG (in an elevated command prompt). Of course do this when the problem occurs so cable connected.
