Cannot connect to VPN and other network problems

First post here so I'm not really sure on the details needed to aid a diagnosis but after searching around I cannot find a solution to the problem I have and have tried numerous methods.

I use a VPN and I preferably used an open vpn connection however after using this method for a considerable amount of time the connection kept disconnecting deeming it unusable.
I have then used L2TP however this no longer connects and hangs on "Connecting to (Server name) using 'WAN Miniport (L2TP)'" and connection is never establised.

At the same time as this although connected to the internet the connection icon has a yellow star over it even though I am connected and everything seems fine. I preferably would like to use open vpn any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Have you tried restoring (using Windows System Restore) your computer back to when your VPN was able to connect?

Another thing, disabling your Firewall and AVG for debugging might help.

I have tried a restore but the restore point is really old and I got a message about a corrupt restore file and did a system file check after googling but that did not work.
Disabled both firewall and AVG still not connecting

Have you tried a wired connection? What's the outcome?

Also, see if changing the WLAN settings DNS'es to Public DNS'es might help.

Same problem even when using a wired connection changed DNS of IPv4 with no change, not sure if IPv6 was needed to be changed

Have you tried Power Cycling your devices?

Will it be possible for you to connect to another Wi-Fi network or Hotspot?

Power cycling seems to have made no difference
Connected to another connection which was also a virgin superhub, still could not connect to VPN. However the yellow star over the connection icon dissapeared and the normal icon with white bars was shown
