Cannot Delete a Word File

Using Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have some MS Word 97-2003 .doc files that I cannot Delete, Move, nor Rename.
I get this message:

The action can't be completed because the file is open in Microsoft Word

If I edit them and do Save As... I cannot delete the new file either.

It only hapens on some of my old files - not all.

If the utilities don't work, as suggested above, your problem is, that something is associated with the files and windows thinks there in use,

If all else fails, go into safe mode, and delete them from there.
That isn't a fix. But its a work around.
