I have a birthday on my calendar which refers to a good friend who has now shuffled off this mortal coil. Every attempt to delete this notation from the calendar results in an error message and suggestion to try again later. After many attempts, no joy. The name has been deleted from my contacts list and address book but remains in the calendar. Can someone help me remove this sad reminder.

Rich, I think the OP is using Windows Live Mail. I used to use it but I now use Outlook 2013 & I can't remember how to remove calendar items.
Bligh.

blumesan, have you googled Windows Live Calendar to see what could be the problem. If your calendar is synced with someone elses calendar then that could create the conflict or if you share the calendar with someone else.

My calendar is not synced with anyone. I do not know if the calendar is "web based" or not. It is only accessed by my home computer but I have not tried access from another computer via the web.

I will google it.

Thanks.

Have googled it. Found many suggestions, none of which worked, save one:

Open Calendar. Select Gear Wheel (right side of ribbon). Select Options. Select Birthday Calendar. Select DELETE.
That did the trick. Naturally it removed all birthday reminders from the Calendar, and of course, the calendar itself.

Next created a new birthday calendar. I then tried to update the Calendar, expecting that would find birthdays in my contact list and add them to the calendar. No luck there. Simply had to add the birthdays back manually. Also note that when I add a new contact, including birthday, that is not automatically added to the birthday calendar.

Solved??
