Cannot get MS Office 2007 autoupdates after setting up new system.

I just helped a friend set up his new HP Pavilion 500T computer that is running Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit. After initial setup and before installing any software, I ran Windows Update and it downloaded and installed about 70 updates with no problems.

I then installed Outlook 2007 (first) and MS Office 2007 Home and Student (second) which he had been using on his previous system. When I installed Outlook 2007 I received the query whether I would like to have Microsoft Update download and install updates for Microsoft software, which I confirmed.

After the installation and setup of the Office products I then opened Windows Update and on the left side clicked on Check for updates. No important new updates, including any Office or Outlook ones, were available. Having followed a similar process when I set up my custom build with Windows 7 I knew there was an issue here.

Looking at his Windows Update window it showed For Windows only by the You receive updates line. It should have read For Windows and other products from Microsoft Update. Below that it had "Get updates for other Microsoft products. Click for details" but when clicking on that it lead to a browser page that showed this:

No interaction on the page. Only thing to do was close it. This exact same scenario (Windows 7, Office 2007 and Windows Update) was described in an older post (Mar 2014) in the Microsoft Office category of this forum. The person there said he got it fixed by a computer repair shop that had to download a Microsoft fix in order to correct it.

If anyone reading is familiar with this issue or has any suggestions on how to resolve it I would appreciate any advice. Just as an aside both the Outlook 2007 and the MS Office 2007 H & S are not Service Pack 3 versions. I have downloaded SP3 from MS and will be installing that. Any chance that might correct the problem?

Let's start with the standard data and work out from there...

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Thanks for the reply. Followed your link and there are 5 numbered steps. Could you please clarify which ones I need to do?

1. Assume step one is necessary. Does the SURT offer me the option to save a log (haven't used it before)?
2. On step two (SFC scan), which of the 3 options do I need to do, or do I do all three of them?
3. I don't think step 3 is relevant because I am not receiving any Windows Update error messages or codes. I'm just unable to have Office 2007 included in the automatic updates.
4. Step 4 - After I have created the CBS.zip file do I attach it to a reply in this thread?

Sorry about the questions but I want to make sure I do this correctly. Also, FYI, I have applied the Office 2007 SP3 update with no change in Windows Update status. Also will probably not be able to post results until tomorrow.

To answer your questions...
1) The CheckSUR tool automatically saves a log in the CBS folder that you are later asked to copy/compress and upload.
2) Use Option 2 - open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run SFC /SCANNOW
3) yep - you can ignore step 3
4) yep - because you already have your own thread (this one) you can upload the file(s) here. The wording is an attempt to reduce the number of times someone has to ask a moderator to split a thread because it's been hijacked by a new problem/poster.

Computers are weird! Started up my friend's new system. Signed into the forum. Was about to download the SURT and then run SFC. Thought I would look at Windows Update once before doing so. It still said Get updates for Windows only. The option below to get updates for other Microsoft products had the same link, See more or Get details, not sure which. Anyway, clicked on it and lo and behold it opened a browser window with the option to install Microsoft Update. I approved that and then back in Windows update it had changed to Get updates for Windows and other Microsoft products!

I did a manual Check for updates and all the Office 2007 important updates showed up (after a bit of a wait). A total of 43 updates which I installed.

Don't know what caused the original problem or what could have changed to allow Microsoft Update to install but the problem seems resolved. Do you think it would help to go through the process you described anyway to see if there are any other issues?
