Hi:

My computer in question is a Toshiba L455-S5980 running Windows 7
Home Premium.

I have a wireless network with a Linksys WRT160N router connected to a
Sony desktop running XP MCE(2005). In addition, I have another Toshiba
laptop running XP Home Edition.

With the new Win7 laptop in the Network I can see all 3 computers, as well
as access files sharing in both the XP computers. However, I cannot access any of
the Win 7 files from the XP computers.

When I go to Network and click on Win 7 name it shows two folders as being shared. Even though one folder indicates "Share" when I Right click on it and go to "Share with" it has a lock icon beside "Nobody" and I cannot change it to Homegroup Read/Write etc. The other folder "Share with" Advanced sharing and I do not know what further to do in ths regards.

The XP computers Workgroup name is MSHOME; however the Win 7 laptop was
named WORKGROUP by default, but I changed this name to MHOME where all 3
computers now have the same Workgroup name,

If anyone can assist me in establishing file sharing of the Win 7
laptop with the XP computers I would be most appreciative.

Thanks,

ColTom2

Check your Windows 7 network sharing:

Network and Sharing Center -> Change advanced sharing settings

Do you have fie and printer sharing enabled? Do you have public folder sharing? Do you have password protected sharing enabled?

Also - do you have identical users and passwords created on all of your computers?

Hi:

File and Printer Sharing is turned on.

Public folder sharing is turned on.

Password protected sharing is turned off because I do not use User passwirds.

Let me restate my problem to be sure that you understand my problem. I can see and share files with my other desktop XP(MCE2005) and laptop XP Home Edition computers with my Win 7 laptop. The problem is that I cannot access Win 7 shared files with the XP computers.

Thanks,

ColTom2

I have two shared folders. One is a local folder named Internet Download which access is denied as you just mentioned. The other folder named Users I can now access with no problems.

However, the Users folder shows a file with the XP computer "desktop.ini" 1 KB Type Configuration settings dated 7/13/2009 which does not show up in Win 7 Users folder.

In addition, there is a folder with my name listed in the Users shared folder on Win7 that does not appear in XP computer. The folder with my name (same as name of computer) contains all the sub folders i.e. My Documents etc that I really also need to access.

I really am appreciating all your help!

Look at your first post ... are all computers in the same work group "MHOME"?

If XP can't get to Win7, then it may be a firewall or your antivirus preventing the sharing.
Just another thought: Disable Windows Defender in "Services"

The problem is that I cannot access Win 7 shared files with the XP computers.
Hi ColTom;

At the moment I have three 7 computers, an XP, and two Ubuntu connected to my home network all sharing files. It sounds like you have your home network setup OK. I am wondering first if you can see your Win 7 computers (not any files or shares) with your XP computer?

I have two shared foders on Win 7. One (Users Folder) has no problem with XP sharing with it. The other is a local folder named Internet Download that I get acesss denied.

If one folder can get through why can't the other?

I did disabled Win Defender, but nothing changed. I have AVG Free 9.0 and have never had any problems with it in situations like this.

Thanks,

ColTom2

I also have 3 computers, two XP and one Win7. Yes I can currently see all 3 computers in my Network workgroup computers on all computers.

I just cannot access a local folder named Internet Download, Also the Users folder which is shared OK, but it has a sub folder that contains My Doc's etc that does show up in shared XP computers even though the main folder does. Why would it leave a sub folder out of a folder that is being shared OK?

Thanks,

ColTom2

Which user folder is shared? Also, have you read the public folders help section? If not, it's a pretty good help topic for sharing files and folders. The easiest way to find the help section is to click "What are the Public folders?" in the advanced sharing settings.

The desktop.ini folder you mentioned earlier shows up because on that computer you have show system/hidden files enabled. It should not be visible accross a network, I wouldn't think, at least not if the networked computer does not have show system/hidden files enabled.

The User folder is a default shared folder in 7. I turned the sharing off on my computers.

For XP computers to see a shared folder in a workgroup, you need to manually share the folder. Select the folder you wish to share (or create a new one) and go to the properties of that folder and manaually share it to everyone:

The Users folder is shared, but like I have previously indicated it has a sub folder that contains My Doc's etc that is not contained in the Users shared folder on XP computers. It show up OK as a sub folder in the Users folder on Win 7 computer.

I would suggest you check the properties of My Doc's?
