Solved Canon digital camera pictures won't download

Just started using new PC that came with Windows 7 installed. Attempts to download pictures from a Canon A460 digital camera fail. It auto-initiates and the PC displays a popup that shows it recognizes the camera and goes through the motions of beginning a download. Then a second popup displays: "No new pictures or videos were found on this device". There is a link to a download settings menu in the first popup, but it won't display while the second popup is open. Upon closing the second popup, they both go away.

This camera readily downloads pictures into a PC running Windows XP Home Edition, or the PC Linux Operating System as well. No cockpit problems here that this experienced PC user can discern.

PC info: New Acer Aspire X1420 with AMD Athlon II x4 645 Processor, 4GB memory, and 500 GB Hdd.

Have you tried Cannon's support site. I see that there is a driver and software package for that model.

I have a Canon that does the same thing. I have had Windows 7 for a couple years so I don't remember exactly what I did when I installed the Canon software. I think the first step might be to go to the Canon site and see if you can find any Win 7 drivers that might make your software work.

No drivers involved, according to Canon website. Installed Canon Zoom Viewer and updated it for Windows 7 (64) in hopes that the photo importer in Windows might use something from it, but still no cigar. I can probably use the ponderous Canon Zoom Viewer for importing, but it is deeply disappointing to find a non functional feature in Windows 7, that I depended on in XP.

This may seem 'old fashioned', but it's the way I do it. When I connect my Cannon Camera to the computer, Either open with autoplay or click computer, and click to open the camera. Go to the pictures and copy/paste them to where you want them or drag and drop them. I never installed the software, as I don't want to automatically download all photos from the camera. I import the ones I want and delete the rest.

I never even bothered to try Canon's downloading software with Win 7 since I didn't like it when I tried it in XP. In XP, I use the Scanner and Camera Wizard and liked it. However, I feel Win 7's Scanner and Camera Wizard is a POS. It doesn't have the flexibility and ease of use that XP's had (it appears MS tried to simplify it's use which resulted in crippling it).

I use IrfanView to download pictures from my camera cards. I just open the folder(s) on the card that has my pictures in IrfanView, select which pictures I want to download with a common file name, then direct the pictures to a folder on computer. Easy peasy. It works even faster than XP's Scanner and Camera Wizard.

Win 7's Scanner and Camera Wizard and it's photo viewer were the only two things I didn't like in Win 7. The photo viewer I replaced with MS Office Picture Manager.

I normally recommend just getting a card reader. They can be had for under $5, and will save on the camera's battery life as well.

I never download directly from the camera. I use the built-in reader on my notebook or an external USB reader on my desktop.
