Solved Canon Digital Cameras - USB Drivers Do Not Work Through Reboots

Well that's provided the camera's have such a setting. I know mine don't, but than this is a new Nikon. And I obviously can't speak for Canon.

Anyway it would be nice if the OP let us know which suggestions he tried and didn't try.

Not yet, I had to give my test camera back to the user because they use it daily for their job. I have another one coming from another user tomorrow, such a hassle. -WS

Everyone, yes a card reader is an option and we do have some users using them as a stop gap. However we would like the cameras to just work, because everyone shares computers, hard to have them all go to 5, 6, 7 or 8 machines that have the readers on them. Plus I would then have to write an SOP for desktop support to make sure if the computer is swapped out the reader STAYS!. UGH!

Surely it's the the incompatible driver that the pc current have in Cache. I know you said you do not use any software (Utility) but it may prove to be the missing link.

When you allow Windows to search and install drivers it's usually from Cache.

I'd say install the Canon Utility and see what happens.

I don't think it is a non compatible driver as Sony and Nikon work OK so why would MS install a non campatible driver for Canon? Canon have confirmed that they have not neede to produce a new driver for Windows 7!

MS offers generic drivers and whilst it works, it might not be adequate. Hence i said to use the third party driver & utility.

I have 3 decent Canon Pro DSLR's and have no problem with them either on Windows 7 or Windows 8.
(I do quite a few photo gigs at a pro level --more and more now as I'm virtually retired from Engineering / Computer projects now).

If I had my time over again - while I enjoyed what I did I think looking back I would have loved to have been a full time PRO shooter. !!! I find it's great now I have more time and the modern equipment brings back the PHOTOGRAPHY to the shooter again without having to worry too much about the technical issues. You can spend your time in creating and composing the shot which is what you are paid for.

PRO shooting is as far away from snapping with mobile phone cameras as you can imagine --and it's huge fun too).

Could you state the model(s) of the Canon camera(s) that are giving the problem.

Mine are EOS 5d MK II (Didn't think upgrade to MK III was worth the extra)
EOS 1D MK IV (two copies).

Can't afford (yet) the fabulous 1D X (well when I win the lottery !!).

None of these have any problem -- and I shoot tethered a lot of the time too.

For my remote handling I use this product - very good indeed. BTW it lists all the drivers etc for a HUGE range of Canon DSLR's. Canon's Software is usually TERRIBLE (Photoshop etc far better even for RAW processing). I love their cameras but HATE the software. !!!!

The remote capture software does it just fine -- otherwise I just use a card reader or even the USB connection. Depends on whether the camera(s) is /are actually tethered to the PC.

please could you look at one of your cameras that you can connect to the PC via a USB cable and look at the menu like this;
menu > the last icon > communication > and see if it is set to PC or print/ptp?

Update: UAC disabled/enabled no difference.

New Information: Cycling through all the USB ports on Dell 7010, Dell 790 and Dell 6530 every port works once until you reboot the computer. Deleting the registry keys for the Canon Camera will allow you to start all over and the camera works until you reboot, pick a new port and the camera works until you reboot.

Some of the machines were missing Windows Updates (as a test) and others were current. All machines have been brought up to date and all still have the same problem.

Also setup a machine that is bare, basically only the OS (Windows 7 Enterprise) and Office 2010, no other software etc. That machine still has the same issues.

Note: Does not matter if you are a Standard Local User, Local Administrator, Standard Domain User, Domain Administrator, Restricted Domain User, or a Limited Domain Administrator. Typically the Local Administrator account can do EVERYTHING so we know this is not a permissions issue. -WS

The user uses Windows Explorer to Copy/Paste to a network share. Once they verify they are there they delete the pictures off the camera. Super simple for the users. -WS

Updates: We now have a brand new Canon PowerShot SX50 HS for testing. Bad news it does the same thing.

Loaded the Canon software for both cameras, no drivers seem to be installed and does not fix the problem. <== Thanks for the idea. -WS

Here is a screenshot, the only place you can change anything is on the wrench and hammer in ORANGE. Nothing about communications.

No, because on the domain is the only way a machine would be deployed. We don't have machines that are off the domain for end users. Testing it that way might answer some questions, (i.e. domain policy issues or some unknown restrictions {but all other USB devices are working}). Without removing or using a computer that is not on the domain is easily tested two "computer on domain" tests. #1 Log on as Local Administrator and/or #2 Turn UAC off. Typically those can tell you if you have a policy or domain problem. If we get desperate I can do that kind of test, but even if it worked I could not deploy the machine and would still have to come up with a fix. I am keeping this one as a test after we try all the other suggestions. Thanks for the idea. -WS

So, thanks for the clarification in your PM. I guess I am over the whole camera thing. My phone has 8mp camera and is always with me so who really needs a camera. I guess I understand SLR cameras but I don't want to pay that kind of money. I guess I am not a picture kind of person anymore.
