Hi

I am having MASSIVE trouble installing a "Canon Inkjet i865" printer on my Windows 7 x64 PC. The printer is a few years old but suddenly stopped working. There is lots of ink in it. The green light on the printer is steady.

I have tried uninstalling the driver and but the reinstalling seems to go wrong.

My Windows can see the printer... i.e. Under "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Devices and Printers" when I connect the printer to the USB (2.0) port, the printer appears under "Unspecified" and is called simply "i865".

When I right click on "i865" and click "Troubleshoot", Windows tries to install the latest driver, but it comes back with "i865 doesn't have a driver. Not fixed"

Under "Troubleshooting Report" I get:
"Problem with PnP devices Detected
There are problems with some PnP devices."

I am also getting the message:

"Printer driver was not installed. Unable to find a core driver package that is required by the printer driver package."

I also tried installing "a0mwin110ea23" from the Canon website. This ran OK but doesn't seem to have helped. I have turned my anti-viral off (AVG) before doing all of this.

History
This printer has always worked fine in the past, on a plug and play basis.
I am trying to work out if there is a fault in my PC's drivers or whether I ma just going to be forced to buy a whole new printer. I hope not because it has been a very reliable little printer and I have lots of spare ink cartridges for it.

Do I need to repair windows in some way? Might I have a virus? (I was taken to a very dubious website by google images about 10 days ago. When I got there I was unable to close my browser and I eventually had to turn the computer off by the mains!)

I tried running a System Restore but this seemed to fail (it got stuck "preparing" to do a system restore for about 45 minutes and eventually I had to reboot by brute force!)

- Any suggestions?

J

Yes I already have Malewarebytes installed and running. But I just did an update and ran a scan earlier today. For completeness I am doing it again.

Yes, I installed that without the system complaining, but the problem appears to be that the only thing to install is an "add-on module" ("Canon Inkjet Printer Driver Add-On Module") and not the driver itself.

More shortly

P.S. I couldn't work out how to boot from my Win7 CD [grrr] and had to run SFC from a command prompt.

Hi

Your link defaults to the same Win7 "add on" that I have already tried, and which requires that the driver is already in place.

> Printer Driver Add-On Module Ver.1.10 (Windows 7/7 x64) 07/20/11
> File Name: aomwin110ea23us.exe

> this software, you can use the printer...

So then I tried changing my O/S to "Windows XP"

> i860 v1.73e Printer Driver for Windows XP 07/25/08
> File Name: i860xp173eusZ.exe

During installation it talks about the "BJ Printer Driver" which sounds wrong - surely my printer is an InkJet not a BubbleJet? Also surely my Windows is x64 not x32 so that may be a problem too. But I temp disabled my AV software and continued. But it goes straight to "Installation incomplete. The printer driver has not been installed."

I then had a look under Windows XP (x64) but there is no driver for that O/S. :^(

Any other suggestions?

P.S. I am starting to think that either the printer is faulty OR that I have a virus. But I dont know how to discover which it is... !

Lots of people have had problems with your Printer and Windows 7 ... Printer 32 bit Drivers can work on Windows 7 ...

According to Microsoft your Printer is compatible with Windows 7 ...

It states that Windows Update supply's the Driver ...

Though I am not convinced of that ...

Have read that some people have Manager to Install the Printer ... Through Device and Printers add ...

To get clear - the printer has been working fine until a couple of days ago.

Can you say any more about this?
What do you mean by "Manager" ?

It looks like there is a way of installing a driver manually, but only if you have the driver located somewhere!

Nope neither of those links helped.

I need the CORE driver not add-ons.

There used to be a Vista Driver for your Printer on the Cannon Website ... As it is no longer available and there are no Windows 7 Drivers sorry I do not know what else to suggest ..

OK I have finally solved the problem myself.

1. I spent about an hour watching a lady from Microsoft do Remote Desktop to try and solve the problem. She failed, but eventually said she could solve the problem for $99, "guaranteed".

2. Nowhere is the correct driver for the Canon i865 visible on-line. There are various "add-on"s but no actual driver for love nor money.

3. Eventually tried to do a system restore yet again, this time using a Win 7 Repair Disk which I specially created for the purpose. But no, it failed. So I went back to the one before - even though that was in early January this year(!). This means I would lose all new installations and all settings changes since then.

But now came back saying it had failed too.

4. So then I rebooted windows normally and guess what? I said that my System Restore *had* worked after all. And by some miracle yes my printer has come back to life, even though all the messages said that it had failed.

I have now wasted two entire days of my life on this.

But you know what? This is why I hate computers. They are supposed to run on pure logic, but they don't they are inconsistent and moody.

Shame on you Microsoft.
Shame on you Canon.

Re-installing a driver just shouldn't be that hard. Really - it just shouldn't. >:^[
