I have an older Canon Imageclass MF5750 that I have installed on my new computer. Win7 puts it in the "Unspecified" portion of the devices/printer on control panel. With it being here, I have no way to force it to update the drivers. I do have the drivers downloaded, but I can't figure out how to make it know that the unspecified device is a printer and, therefore, be able to update drivers.
Win7 home premium 64 bit.

Hello scomack. Welcome to the Forum

I had this same problem installing my MF3240. I can't remember all my steps exactly, and I didn't write them down, but I'll try to recall the best I can.

The downloaded W7 drivers from Canon are in a zipped folder. Expand that folder and put it somewhere easy to find. In the main folder will be 3 .inf files with corresponding .cab files. These are the drivers you will use.

Option 1:

  1. In Devices and Printers, right click on the "Unspecified" device and select Properties.
  2. If I recall correctly, there was a Find Driver button here. If not, check all the listed options.
  3. Choose "Find a Driver Manually"
  4. Browse to the driver folder that contains the .inf files > Select it > Next
  5. It will install all 3 drivers for printer, scanner, and fax.
Option 2:

  • Go to Control Panel > Hardware > Device Manager
  • In "Other Devices" will be "Unknown" device > Rx on it > Select: "Update Driver"
  • Choose "Find a Driver Manually"
  • Browse to the driver folder that contains the .inf files > Next
  • It will install all 3 drivers for printer, scanner, and fax.
Option 3:

  1. Uninstall the "Unspecified" Device from Devices and Printers
  2. Choose: "Add a Printer" from the top > Choose: Local Printer
  3. Choose a Port > choose one of the open "Virtual Printer Ports for USB" (ie: USB001)
  4. Drivers > Choose: "Have Disk" > Browse to the driver folder that has the .inf files > OK > OK.
  5. Enter a Printer Name
The actual step by step may be slightly different for you, but you get the idea. You just want to manually install the printer drivers from the driver folder you created.

Hope that helps.

thanks for your help in getting me this far.
Option #2 (with some mods to naming) worked to get the drivers loaded. It now shows up as a printer; however, I am not getting anything to print to it. Every time I try, it says it needs troubleshooting and then says that there is a print job in the print queue that is keeping anything else from going. it says it fixes that, but nothing comes. On the printer options, it shows the printer as being on lpt1. From old days, I would think that was correct. Since this is a USB connection, is that still true?

No. Not LPT1.

For USB connection you need to use a virtual printer port. If this is your only printer use USB001.

Go to Devices & Printers > select the printer> Right click > Choose: Printer Properties > go to the Ports Tab > scroll down to change the port from LPT1 to USB001.

Be sure to cancel all print jobs first.

canon imageclass mf5750

I am looking for the drivers for the Canon Imageclass MF5750 all-in-one printer. I connected the printer but received a message that the drivers were unable to be installed. I checked the Canon site but there is no download for Windows 7 64bit OS. I see alot of advertisers claiming they have a driver, but I tried a couple and they did not work. According to some posts , many have been able to get the printer to work but not the scanner with Windows 7 64bit.

drivers mf5750

I ended up calling Canon 1-800-ok-canon who directed me to the download for the drivers. They are for the fax and the printer. The scanner works through the printer but sets it up as a jpeg in the pictures folder. They said if I wanted to turn it into a pdf I would have to contact adobe acrobat for a program. Thx.

I hope you got it all working. It was still a pain for me since it never recognized my device as a printer. That made it hard to to a quick update on it. Eventually, I got the print to work but I wouldn't be able to document how.

Cannon printers using Windows 7 64 bit

Thank you TVeblen for your posted response last year. I followed your instructions about going through device manager and it worked very nicely. It seems you have to make windows 7 64 bit OS to recognize the cannon softwear. I have a 5750 and it is working just fine because of your instructions. Again THANK YOU for your information. I really hate to keep paying for IT help. Many blessings to you.

after some fiddling, looks like adjusting the port to usb001 worked.
allowed me to install the driver manually.
