Hi there

it should recognize it as a USB device -- just plug the USB into your computer and switch the camera on. Ensure there's a card in it.

If the camera is USB 1.1 and not USB 2 (the early rebels might have been USB 1.1) then not sure. You shouldn't need any special drivers -- W7 will just say New USB drive.

I'd use a Card reader for camera cards - especially doesn't the Rebel use "Micro Drive or CF cards".

The other way is to download the update to the Canon DPP software from the Canon site. This should be able to "Acquire" images from your camera.

Download Library - Canon USA Consumer Products

also this is a great Photographic Forum -- you might get help there - remember though most are Photographers not Computer specialists but some members are pretty good.

fredmiranda.com: Specialized in Canon - Nikon SLR Cameras, Forum, Photoshop Plugins, Actions, Reviews, Hosting and Digital Darkroom

If all else really fails and you don't want to use a Card reader then an XP virtual machine will certainly work without any problems.

You really can fix stupid! This is a brand new PC, and forgot that it had card readers in it! The old one didn't. Thanks

Windows 7 does not recognize Rebel XT EOS. This is a really quick fix: Connect your Canon Rebel XT EOS to your computer via USB cord, turn you Canon Rebel XT EOS on, click menu on camera, go to the 4th menu which is tool settings, arrow down to communication, change setting from PC Connection to Print/PTP. Your Canon Rebel XT EOS should now show up in your devices and you should be able to see all of your photos. This fix takes about 1 minute to do and solves all of your problems. Don't know why Canon does not have this info on their website. Enjoy your memorable photos on your new computer. :)

FliGi7 please read the threads properly!

Actually FliGi7 you are incorrect, sorry to say. Canon does not have any driver for Windows 7 for the Canon Rebel XT EOS. Please re-read the thread as I have posted the solution to this problem. It is a setting within the camera, not Windows 7. May I suggest prior to posting to a thread, you read the thread, and then read the link prior to sending people to a problematic link. Thanks!

Actually I am not incorrect and I never said there were any Windows 7 drivers for the XT. There is a thing called compatibility mode in Windows 7 which allows you to install drivers and software from older versions of Windows. So, all you'll need to do is download the XP drivers and use them in compatibility mode on Windows 7. May I suggest that you get a better understanding of Windows 7 before posting any more suggestions on a forum dedicated to an operating system you obviously don't fully understand yet? May I suggest you understand there is often not a singular solution to a problem? May I also suggest that you not suggest that my link is problematic when in fact it is not?

Shall we continue suggesting or do you now understand that there are other solutions than just yours that fully address a fix to this problem within the operating system itself rather than trying to use settings within the device intended for other uses? I hope you have more to contribute to this forum than this.

FliGi7 Still Incorrect - Read Statement From Canon's Website

Actually you are still incorrect. Anyone reading this thread just go to Canon's website and this what Canon states regarding a driver for Canon Rebel XT EOS:

Canon U.S.A. : Support & Drivers : Digital Rebel XT

"Drivers & Software

Drivers & DownloadsChoose an operating system from the drop down menu then select the appropriate driver or software from the list below
Choose Operating System:

Drivers and Manuals are not available for this model.

DriversDate PostedFile SizeNo drivers are available for this selection. This operating system may not require a driver or, in the case of older operating systems, may no longer be supported."

Once again, I will say there is a simple solution that takes less than 1 minute to change a setting on your camera when you hook it up. If FliGi7's comments are correct, don't you think Canon would recommend downloading an older OS version's driver and then switch to compatability mode? No, they state the above, which is "Drivers and Manuals are Not Available". Let anyone who reads this make up their own mind. I am done arguing with someone that is trying to make a simple solution into a complicated one for computer novices. Why in the world would you download a driver from an older verson of Windows and then have your Windows 7 run in compatability mode. Completely absurd. Anyone who reads this, try my resolve first, if you don't like it, I guess try this guy's comments. I would never download any other OS driver, I would find another way around or you will find problems down the road.

Right. Completely absurd. No one should ever use the specifically built-in features of Windows 7 Compatibility Mode that address issues exactly like this. That would just be dumb and inferior to a solution that involves tricking the computer.

Driver problem

Thanks skiwoodi - your solution is the one that works and its simple and quick. I wasted 2 hours trying others, nothing else worked.

Going from PC Connection to Print/TPT is a solution that works for me however.....it causes the Canon EOS Utility (computer/camera tethering for remote shooting) to NOT recognize the camera. It tells me I have to use the PC Connection setting in order to use that software. Well if I do that, the computer won't recognize the camera at all and I'm back to square one. Anyone have a work-around for this one? I've already tried the driver route and updated my EOS Utility software. Still dead in the water. I'm using Windows 7/64x.

Thanks Skiwoodi - this was a ridiculously simple fix. I also didn't need to gum up my Win7 machine with irrelevant software! ...and I agree with you - why can't Canon make it simple and just say it?!

My problem with this is Windows 7 should be backward compatible and I feel there is a legal issue here.

This is a simple i/o issue and support should be available for "standard" usb ports.

Yes Canon can write new drivers, but Microsoft should not have created this problem in the first place let alone allowing this to go on for all this time.

I am not a software writer but I am sure with existing hardware that worked fine in Vista someone should be able to fix this problem so I can use the remote function of my Canon SLR.

I have put this plea on other forums to no avail so thought I would wake this one up in the hope that somebody on here knows what they're doing and can fix this.

One more solution that will also work... essentially the same as running the camera in PTP mode...

Take the flash card out of the camera, and plug it into any USB card reader (e.g. this one from IOGear). If your computer already has such a card reader, well that much the easier.

Bingo. You don't need the camera to access the flash card itself, which is where the pictures are.

Furthermore, Canon's application software (e.g. Zoom Browser) works perfectly with the external card in the reader, for importing pictures directly from the card out of the camera and in such a reader.

Eureka!

I have recently taken delivery of my new SLR a D550.
Which came with the usual Canon software and connection leads to USB.
The remote operation works fine in Windows 7 unless I try a longer lead then it doesn't recognise the camera. So the moral is to get a Canon compatible lead, I will try my old 350 on it when I get back to work but I thik this is what has been causing the problem all along. YIPPEE!

It does seem a bit of a stretch to theorize that it is the particular USB connection cable or its length which is really at work here.

In fact, the Microsoft Hardware Compability Site shows that the EOS 550D is compatible with Win7. This from Microsoft, via Canon.

In contrast, the base Rebel XT (model 0206B001) is shown as NOT COMPATIBLE although other models in the Rebel family are shown as compatible.

Again, it's the flash card itself you're after. Either configure the camera PTP to appear simply as an external removable USB drive, or remove the flash card and insert it into an internal or external USB card reader, and avoid any "compatibility" or "supported" issues with the old camera itself.

Again, the Canon software works just fine with the flash card in a reader. Seems like a very simple solution.

Until I check my 350 on the new lead it is a theory but I have tried my new cam on all the leads I have and though the ptp option works, the remote control functionality doesn't.
I'll let you know, in the new year when I get back to work.
Regards.
