Can't access network computers

Every time I try to access a computer on the network I get this error:



I am the only user on this computer and am part of the administrators group.

I'm not a network jock, but I did come across this post in the Vista Forums by someone having the same issue.

They seem to have some good tutorials listed there.

The one I'm trying to access is my own computer. I tried resetting the windows firewall to default policy and turned network discovery and file sharing back on but that didn't change anything.

I have no other software firewall.

Hmm - interesting - I have mine working perfectly fine. What AV software are you using?

I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials 64-bit.

That might be the issue then. Try disabling that and see if it works- also, did you let the troubleshooter complete all tasks?

Yeah I let the troubleshooter go through all the steps and disabled/renabled file sharing.

I tried pinging \\seandesk and net view \\seandesk and both were successful.

I also flushed the DNS cache and restarted the DNS Client service.

None of that seemed to fix it.

Are your public folders on? Also, was this an upgrade or a clean install? I have had some major issues with upgrading in terms of permissions problems with folders on a second HD that is not the system drive yet where I do store system-related stuff, like program files for games installations, my Special folders, etc.

same computer - as in I am logged into TheBeastIV trying to access (via network) TheBeastIV.

Check your WORKGROUP. Make sure it is the same on all computers. (go to control panel, system)

It's the same default WORKGROUP for all computers and I'm not on a domain.

I'm really confused why this is happening, but I'm inclined it has something to do with HomeGroup since I had that set up but then left it.

Also this is a clean install of 7100 x64

I just recently had some issues with Homegroup, and subsequently left the home group in favor of traditional Network file sharing, and solved the network access problem by rebooting the Modem, Router and each machine. Everything became unlocked then.

But first I spent a few hours trying to "figure out the problem" . Hopefully, it is something that simple for you...

But I will bet that you have a new win 7 install and the other computer is on xp, right?

Both computers have windows 7 x64 build 7100 one is a laptop with Dell wireless-g network card the other is a desktop with a Linksys wireless-g network card.

I already tried rebooting the router remotely and each computer.

That error only comes up if the other computer is not connected, or if there is something wrong in network permissions. can you see the other computers in networking (without connecting)?

Is it a homegroup?
do you have the password the same on both computers?
is the homegroup the same?

I hate to suggest simple stuff like this but sometimes it is that simple.

Not a homegroup, then a workgroup. what are you trying to access on the other computer? is it a shared lib, or data like in xp networking? who owns the data you are trying to access? Is the user id the same on both computers/

Really I'm just trying to access my own computer through the network right now since that is supposed to work as it does on my laptop with same operating system. Both my laptop and desktop are on WORKGROUP, yes. The user ID and password is the same on both computers and all the data is my own. The shares are located at \\<COMPUTERNAME>\Users\Public on each computer. I tried reseting windows firewall to default policies and then turning it off. I tried resetting my router, and restarting my computer. I tried deleting stored Generic Credentials and flushing the DNS cache.
