I can't open html files with Firefox. They open with Windows Media Player instead. When I select CHANGE.. to try choose Firefox to open the html file, Firefox is not listed in the RECOMMENDED PROGRAMS or OTHER PROGRAMS list, and when I BROWSE... for it, and select the Firefox.exe, nothing happens.

1. Properties.jpg

2. Open With.JPG

In SET YOUR DEFAULT PROGRAMS, I noticed that Firefox has a Windows Media Player icon and says FIREFOX MICROSOFT WINDOWS.

3. Set Your Default Programs.JPG

4. Set Associations for a Program.JPG

In ASSOCIATE A FILE TYPE OR PROTOCOL WITH A PROGRAM, when I select CHANGE PROGRAM.. I am unable to associate Firefox with html files. Firefox is not listed in the RECOMMENDED PROGRAMS or OTHER PROGRAMS list, and when I BROWSE... for it, and select the Firefox.exe, nothing happens.

5. Associate a File Type or Protocol with a Program.JPG

I've tried deleting the Firefox entry from REGISTRY EDITOR:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\RegisteredApplications

I've tried uninstalling Firefox, and deleting the folder...

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

...and then restarting my PC and installing the latest Firefox as administrator, but it didn't fix it.

Any ideas how to fix this?

I had a similar problem when all my HTML files were opening in IE instead of Firefox and all my jpg files were opening in Windows Image Viewer. Install this:

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html

Click EXTENSION in the first column to alphabetize the list.
Right-click on a file extension,
then "Edit selected file type."
Choose your new settings
Repeat for other extensions.
OK at bottom
Test.

Thanks RoWin7, I ended up using the REPLACE FILE TYPE FOR SELECTED EXTENSION option to associate Firefox with HTML files. After doing that, Firefox was available in the RECOMMENDED PROGRAMS list when choosing the program to open the HTML file with in WINDOWS EXPLORER.

Now I just have to work out how to fix the issue in SET YOUR DEFAULT PROGRAMS. Firefox still has the WMP icon and says FIREFOX MICROSOFT WINDOWS.

Did you mean #6?

#6 just says: "Click on OK. (See screenshot below step 3A)".

Also, there is no step 3A.

I've tried the SET THIS PROGRAM AS DEFAULT but it doesn't fix the FIREFOX MICROSOFT WINDOWS issue.

What happens now when you open an html file?

When I set FIREFOX MICROSOFT WINDOWS as default, it looks like this, and opens .htm, .html, .shtml, .xht, and .xhtml with WMP:

Not Step #6.
Post #6 says "Right click on the WMPC shortcut and click on "Run as administrator" and try doing that again to see if it may work this time. Some programs may require to run elevated for this type of option to work properly."

Don't know why it's not changed. Did you close and reboot? Let's see if we can get more help here.

I can't work out what it means by "try doing that again", I'm not sure what it wants me to do. The link's dead.

I don't think the issue I'm having now has to do with file associations. It has to do with a bug in the SET YOUR DEFAULT PROGRAMS application. The options for Firefox has somehow become a Firefox/WMP hybrid. The Firefox option thinks it's both Firefox and WMP.

WMP has it's own icon and options that work fine. It's the Firefox icon and options that have the hybrid bug. For some reason there are two Firefox entries, both with WMP icons, and default settings that associate browser file types with WMP instead of Firefox. It's messed up!

What I meant was to do your fix as Administrator. This is so strange that i can't find it anywhere online. Did you change the FF association and icon in FileTypesManager also? And is it fixed when you reboot?

Let's see if we can get @Paul Black, @Lady Fitzgerald or @wither 2 over here.

What fix are you talking about?

I only associated .html files with Firefox in FileTypesMan, I did not change any icons, or any other file types.

The .html file was fixed without a reboot... if that's what you mean.

After using FileTypesMan, Firefox was available in the RECOMMENDED PROGRAMS list when choosing the program to open the HTML file with in WINDOWS EXPLORER. That's how I associated .html files with Firefox.

See above image. If I was to SET THIS PROGRAM AS DEFAULT for FIREFOX MICROSOFT WINDOWS, the .html would be ticked again (like the other EXTENSIONS in the list), and have a WMP music note as it's icon.

Maybe tweaking.com's wndows al in one repair might be useful here. There are file-reAssocation clicks and a couple of reset windows to default operations clicks. I am on a tablet, my typing is not great.

I would have liked to see if that worked. Where is the All-In-1 Repair?

Thanks, and I didn't mind the delay. Keylonta's problem was so unusual, and I hope s/he comes back.
