Can't copy files from external HDD to internal.

Just an update. I tried doing this with my laptop as well - and with different drives - and it will transfer smaller folders and/or files between drives, but won't transfer bigger folders.

The stats on the "Music" folder that I'm trying to move are: 131GB, with 13,893 files in 1,809 folders.

Has anyone managed to transfer a folder that big using Windows 7? It seems strange that my laptop won't do it either, and that it doesn't matter which drives I try it on.

Like I say it seems to be a size issue (not permissions, or free space) because smaller folders are fine, but when the folder exceeds a certain size it won't budge. There's no dialogue or verbose output of any kind.

It's a bit of a moot point now as I've used an Ubuntu live CD to copy the files over without any problems.

I'm still wondering if anyone else has been able to copy/move/paste a folder that size using Windows 7? I'm thinking it may be a size limitation in the OS at the moment.

Hi and welcome

Not an OS limitation. I have moved much larger files on 332bit so i am sure 64bit would work as well. I think its more a function of the HD speed and ram.

Thank you. At least I know it's just me now.:( Hopefully as I get better at this Windows stuff I'll be able to configure my system to be able to do these sorts of things.

Marco.

Hmm odd issue.
Are you trying to copy from the Music library or Music in Documents which is in the library.
Try copying the Music folder from Documents rather than from the library in Windows 7.
Unless you already have then I am not sure.
Maybe try something like TeraCopy so you do not have to boot into Linux all the time just to move files.

You might look at this, they never say if it solved it or not and not quit the same situation but might be worth a try.

Windows 7 Ultimate file copy problems

Here's a "Me Too" my problem is photo files (jpg). I can do them a little at a time from a network share but not more than ~2gb at a time to my laptop hard drive. As a side note the referenced link as posted by kbz1960 has an answer of bad memory.

But just throw a little more dirt into the mud - I have no problem copying lare amounts of files from the network share to a SD card in laptop. So if memory was a problem I would think it would be for that also.

i know this is an old post but i found it through google because i was having the same problem, copying files from ubuntu to external hd to windows. my specific problem was all in a file name. one of the folders had a colon in the name, which ubuntu would allow but windows wouldn't. not sure why it didn't come up with a dialog or anything, but i deleted that folder and tried to copy my music folder again and it worked just fine.

just thought i'd post in case someone else is having this problem, maybe it'll help them.
