Can't do a Windows 7 no-reformat, nondestructive reinstall

Hi all,

I need some Magic.
I am trying to do a Windows 7 no-reformat, nondestructive reinstall. I have my original Win7 Sp1 (64BIT) installation DVD, my original 25-character product key, and a current backup.

When I run the setup.exe, the blue "Install Now" window appears. I click install now and another window opens saying, "Setup is copying temporary files". The disk runs for a while and then
goes back to the "Install Now" screen. And that's it. If I click "Install Now" again, it goes back to the installing files screen again. This repeats over and over in a loop.

I have tried it with my Firewall and anti-virus programs turned off. Same thing.
I made an ISO file from the disk and used Rufus to create a bootable Win7 USB drive and tried to do the install from that but the same thing happened.

Can you help?

That sounds to me like you are trying to do it while booted to Win7 instead of booting to the disc. Since it's a full version it probably can't happen, have to install when booted to the disc and same for the USB.

I read Brinks's tutorial and tried to follow it. That's where I got the info.

My problems started a while back when I couldn't install windows updates for .net framework and IE 11. Then I there was a Microsoft Security Essential program update that wouldn't install. I read everything I could find. Tried various Microsoft Fixit
prgrams...those did nothing or wouldn't install at all. I think the problem is with Windows installer itself because I don't have any trouble installing other software.

Just a idea.
Remove every hard drive except the one with Windows 7 install and try again.
I personally have never had that tutorial fail me.

Could you post using this tutorial by Golden so we can take a look at Disk Management.

Thanks Berton. I looked all over the place and can't find any way to download Windows Installer 5.0. Am I missing something?

Is this what you need?

Unhook disk #1 and see if it will boot.
We need to make sure Disk '0' partition 'C' will boot.
If it boots try the Repair install again.
If every thing work as it should do this below.

Remove the active flag form "G" and try again with another reboot. Windows see 2 active partitions and don't know what you are trying to do.

What is on "G" ?

C boots fine and G is my Macrium Backup. I've made several attempts at repair install with no luck.

Does your install DVD have SP1 included? If not, that may be the problem since Windows 7 on the hard drive will definitely have SP1.

If G is not hooked up and Windows 7 boots that is good.
Do you have all Windows updates.

The only other thing I can think of; Microsoft doesn't like your install.

Did you leave Disk 1 unhooked?? The drive with "G" partition.

"Unhooking" a disk beyond my pay grade. But I can tell you that I'm not having a boot problem. What I can't do is install anything Microsoft.

All you have to do is unplug the power cable from that drive, but only when the PC is off and drained of power.
