Hi,

I have a newly "installed" (portable) office program that won't load it's registered file types when I click on them and i'm trying to figure out if it's a software problem, a Windoze problem or improperly registered file types in the reg.

Here's the background: I just installed a copy of SoftMaker Free Office 18. After it's normally installed it allows you to also create a portable (& less bloated) copy of itself on a flashdrive, etc. Which I did. Then I opened my registry editor and exported all of the keys, subkeys & values necessary to register the desired filetypes. Next I uninstalled SM Office and moved my "portable" version to the same path as the installed version. And everything works very well EXCEPT that clicking on a file type that should open & display in the application just opens the program with a "working in background" cursor showing for 20 sec or so but the file never loads. If I navigate from the File Open menu it loads the file just fine. OR if I load the file using the SendTo in the Context Menu it opens the file normally. Including StartMenu items referred thru the SendTo menu. But simply clicking on the file won't open the file. This is true of all 4 file types I have registered.

I've attached a reg file for the .xls file type so you can see if i'm missing anything.

Any ideas?

Maybe that is point of the portable version. Usually they don't write to the registry, so why do you expect it to respond to your reg entries?

Sorry I left out a key piece of infomation: after the uninstall, etc I merged the reg file I had created to register the desired file types. If I have done that correctly (which is doubtful) then Windoze should sent the file to the registered program. Which is why I uploaded the reg file - to get a 2nd opinion as to it's correctness & completeness.

SIW2 spoke golden apples (words) upon a silver platter. I add: Why not simply use the HDD residing office suite?
