I wouldn't touch any of those offers on the web, unless you can confirm prior to purchase that they are genuine.
going the upgrade way via XP, might prove difficult and expensive in UK w7 pro (legit) bout £120+

We now have 2 options,
Both will have to be updated from scratch.

a) borrow the "chaps" discs and perform a Repair install, it wll be quicker to repair than install
no requirement for activation should be required

b)Using this forums resources we now have plan b

you can download an iso file of the version you need from here and burn to dvd and no more then x4 speed with this simple program.

so you will have a complete set of w7 discs for the future

Just run as a full 1st time install.

In either case immediatelly after fully updating your comp, download either Acronis or Macrium free
and make a full system image, saves you having to update your system if you have to reinstall in the future

note if you only have 2GB ram only use the 32bit version, its the min requirement for W7

As it turned out, the old man (he is 86) with the nearly identical PC was off visiting relatives this weekend, so I got impatient and went to the ISO mirror site you recommended. It took me a while (and a trial run) to understand how the Torrent process worked. I found that there were two versions of the 32 bit Win7Home Premium ISO on the site you directed me to, one with a 'u' in the title and a slightly earlier one without the 'u'. Could the 'u' mean that one of ISO files is an upgrade version?

The 'uTorrent' software made the download process easy enough except it would only allow the downloaded files to be deposited to my C partition.

The 'FreeISOBurner' software only gave me two choices for burn speed: 'Max' and '16x' I used '16x'. The 'FreeISOBurner' software also had a box to check for finalizing the DVD transfer. I assumed checking the 'finalize' box meant nothing further could be written to the DVD. I did not check the 'finalize' box as I wondered if some additional files should be added to the DVD to make it bootable. Yes, no, or not useful?

The 'repair' tutorial you referred me to seems to say that I can boot my PC with the corrupted Win7Home Premium already installed on my PC and then go to the ISO DVD and allow the files on the ISO DVD to overwrite whatever it doesn't like on my PCs hard drive. Right?

The PC's hard drive has a number of very small partitions (D, E, and F) on it with 65 gB of capacity in the C partition. I assume that nothing would be written in the D, E, and F partitions during the repair but I'll plan to back them up regardless. As the PC with the corrupted Win7Home Premium OS is not being otherwise used, whatever else is in the C partition can be easily replaced (this response comes via an old XP machine being used for e-mail pending getting the Win7Home Premium PC working properly).

Am I on the right track? -- and thank you again for all your advice and assistance.
