Solved Can't make Macrium rescue disk

I've made backup images in Macrium several times, but just tried making the rescue disk recently.
Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect | Tutorials

Note dates on log. I started this on 5/14, tried 4 times, tried 4 more times on 5/26. I followed the wizard precisely and this was the result at the end:

"Copying the Win PE files
An error occurred extracting the Macrium Reflect WinPE files
Unmounting the WIM.
Installation not complete"


I don't think there are any differences in the 8 instances.
Because this is such an important disc, I'm walking on eggshells. Should I reinstall the program?
Cut the log, to comply with rules here, but there were 8 repetitions. The error is in red

It does sound like it is perhaps downloading corrupt PE files, try using the iso option first and make sure you get the latest PE version downloaded. The latest will still work on images of 7. I would then use rufus to make the flash drive or cd manually.

Rufus is overly complicated. Can we do the easiest options first?

1--I'm using a CD-R. Is that the same as the ISO option?
2--Where would I get new PE files? Do they come from Macrium's site? Can I still do a CD-R with the new PE files?
3--How big a flash drive do I need to do this? My only empty one is 8GB, but I'd rather use a CD-R.

4--My other computer has the same version of Macrium. Will I have the same problem with that one, or is it computer-specific?

Hi RoWin7,

Rufus is overly complicated.

This is the instructions for something else but it will give you a general guide of how to use Rufus.

When creating a Bootable USB using Rufus, you can pretty much leave the default settings as they are.

[01] Insert the USB into the computer.
[02] Double click the downloaded Rufus.exe file.
[03] Click Run.
[04] In Device, select the USB.
[05] Leave the Partition scheme and target system type as MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI.
[06] Leave the File system as FAT32 (default)[/B].
[07] Leave the Cluster size as the default.
[08] In the New volume label box enter the name that you want to call it.
[09] Tick the Create a bootable disk using box and from the drop down menu select ISO image.
[10] Click the search box next to ISO image and browse to and select the downloaded ISO image.
[11] Click Open.
[12] Click Start.
[14] It will now say Copying ISO files... [this will take about two or three minutes].
[15] When it shows READY, click Close.
[16] Safely remove the USB.

However, you may be confronted with some ERRORS. Here are the errors and the ways to overcome them:

[1] If the message This image uses Syslinux x.xx/xxxxxxxx but this application only includes the installation files for Syslinux x.xx/xxxx-xx-xx appears, this is because the version of Linux that is being installed is newer that what Rufus is supporting by default. Click Yes to download the new files.
[2] If the message ISOHybrid image detected appears, click OK.
[3] If the message WARNING: ALL DATA ON DEVICE WILL BE DESTROYED appears, click OK.
[4] If the message IMPORTANT: THIS DRIVE CONTAINS MULTIPLE PARTITIONS!! appears, click OK.
[5] If the message Error: Could not open media. It may be in use by another process. Please re=plug the media and try again appears, click Close. You simply un-plug the USB and re-plug it back in and start again. This time it will work!

That's fine, the file size of the image it makes is only 700MB max. If you want to try it as the cd from reflect again try hitting advanced under the media builder and under base WIM pick 10 and let it download that fresh and not use the built in one. EDIT: also make sure that your opening macrium reflect as an administrator.

I'm running v. 6.3 because it doesn't run constantly in the background, whereas the newer one does.

I ran Crystal Disk. What do you need? I really can't handle doing UBDC, MemTest and Furmark. Do I need those to make my rescue disk? I've been running Macrium for years without them. Or are you looking for why the PE files won't load?

I'll do whichever works, the USB or the CD.

#8 is grayed out, but all my flashdrives already have names to distinguish them.
I got up to #10, but where is the ISO image I'm supposed to copy?

This is why I used to make clones instead of images. You just used them as is. But now I have so much empty space on huge drives that I can't clone them.

The stuff about ubcd and furmark is just in my signature that is under every post, you can ignore that stuff as it does not pertain to you at the moment. I would install 7 to have it create your rescue disk since it seems the issue may be with your 6.3 install have it make the media then uninstall it and put your 6.3v back if you prefer. Just back up your scheduled tasks in the program first if you have any setup in case it removes them which I don't think it will. By in the background do you mean the Image Guardian?

The #10 is the ISO you would have made in reflect instead of a usb key from reflect if it had worked.

Should be able to use it for both, to see if it works boot off that cd on your pc and it will load up the reflect ui.

I had some problems installing the program, so I'm not switching back to the older version. Just glad everything works. I do have a life outside my computers.

While I have your attention, here's what it was, unrelated to Macrium itself. If necessary, I'll move the problem to another forum:

This has happened with a few other installations also. I always "install as Administrator." No, the Hidden Admin. doesn't work.

The install is almost finished, then it says it doesn't have permission to access the StartMenu in ProgramData-etc-etc to make the shortcut. If I cancel at that point, all the installed files roll back. This time I tricked it by making the shortcut myself, but the dialog said it wasn't finished. I turned off the computer and rebooted as a means of closing the dialog box, and it worked.

That's why I'm not going back to the older Reflect. just glad it works.

I just had problems with Win 7 Pro and tried a backup I made months ago with Macrium Reflect... it made me wait 30 mins just to stop the backup process at 50%. Honestly, I wouldn't suggest, as for my experience, for system restore, backup data maybe but not system restore (since the shadow copy service doesn't seem to work... even in windows debug/temporary mode). ;(
