I have a Windows 7 desktop and a Windows XP laptop and I cannot for the life of me get them to see each other. I have followed online instructions repeatedly - they are in the same workgroup name, the Advanced settings in Windows 7 are set to have discovery and sharing ON and password is OFF, I've tried rebooting, re-joining the network, turning the HomeGroup off, etc, etc and I don't know what the issue is.

The Windows 7 machine is wired to the modem, and the laptop is wireless - not sure if that can be an issue?

The firewall is just the regular Windows Firewall, which I understand shouldn't need special settings to allow the networking.

Not sure what info I need to provide for someone to be able to help me, but I am getting so frustrated!!! :(

Have you rebooted the router and pc's at the same time?

Disabled encryption to test?

Both are on the same workgroup? etc

So far, I can access the XP machine by going to Start > Run and typing in \\(ip address) but I can't access the Win 7 machine from the XP machine at all.

I don't know why they are different or how to turn IPV6 on or off. One is connected wirelessly (192.168.0.13) and the other is connected to the wireless router with an Ethernet cable. I tried assigning it an IP on the router by MAC address but it didn't work.

OK, so IPv6 is enabled on the Win 7 machine, but it doesn't seem to do anything (not supported by my ISP, maybe?) so I turned it off now.

I tried assigning an IP though the TCP/IP settings, but then I couldn't get to the internet. It seems be wired to the modem makes it want to use the IP it's using - I can't seem to get it on to the same network of IPs that my WiFi devices are on. By the way, I've got a Motorola SBG900 for my cable modem/WiFi router.

I set the MAC address of the Win 7 machine as IP 192.169.0.19 on the router and had no luck. Then I also tried setting the 192.168.0.19 (an available IP I chose for the Win 7 machine) as an alternate IP in the settings, but no luck, there, either.

Maybe it's a matter of getting it to use one of the 192.168.0.XX IPs, but I've not figured out how to do that yet...

Thank you. I followed the instructions (which were pretty much the same as every other set of instructions I've come across) and it's not working. I can still only access the XP machine from the Win 7 machine by IP address and cannot access the Win 7 machine from the XP machine at all. In both cases, I cannot see the other machine in the network or workgroup.

All I can figure is it has to do with the IP address of the Win 7 machine as another user pointed out?

I'm losing hope. :(

FYI, in case it helps, my setup is as follows:

Cable in to Motorola Surfboard SBG900
Ethernet out from Surfboard to Vonage Router
Ethernet out from Vonage Router to Win 7 PC
WiFi to Win XP Laptop

Googling the Vonage router shows that it is what's giving the http://192.168.15.2 IP, so I'm going to see if I can somehow change that...

AHHHH! That was it. Thank you, richyrichuk, for pointing out the differing IP address. I pulled out an old Linksys hub and changed my setup:

Cable -> Motorola SBG900 Wireless Router
Motorola SBG900 -> Linksys hub, Win XP Laptop (via WiFi)
Linksys hub -> Vonage Router, Win 7 PC

Now the Win XP and the Win 7 are on the same network and saw each other right away (plus the Win 7 can now see my other wireless devices on the network, such as my Roku player).

All is right with the world again!!!
