Hi,

Ive just installed Windows 7 Pro and im struggling to open a downloaded file. Ive downloaded MSE 64-Bit and it wont work together with Speccy. The file is there in downloads but nothing happens.

The other issue is that in my browsers, Chrome and IE9 the pages seem like they have not loaded correctly.

Can you assist please.

Mick

I don't think that would be the issue, but I don't know for sure.
You do need to have a genuine Windows to use MSE, but I would think a new install not yet activated would be considered genuine.
Maybe someone else here will know if I'm wrong and that is the issue.

It looks like you have an Acer PC and you re-installed Windows.
Where did you get the Windows installation disc, or did you do a factory recovery?

This tutorial has everything needed to re-install, including a link to get the latest official Windows ISO.
You do need a valid key to use this, but you can compare how you installed Windows to this tutorial.

I downloaded it from digital river as the disc I got with the COA was a Dell one. I've never had this issue before on any clean install, normally everything works 100%.

All I can think is that it's not been activated with the key?

Thanks,

When I tried using the Dell Disc that came with the COA it partitioned the Hard Drive into 2 sections. System reserved and Windows.

I'm just wondering that I've tried the disc from digital river and it's obviously having issues with the system reserved partition made by the Dell Disc.

I'm going to format the Hard Drive tonight and try a fresh install with the latest download from The link you sent me.

I'll keep you posted, thanks for your help!

you can not use mse without a activated windows, that being said it will install then not activate as it tells you need to be genuine then when you are it works as intended, are you opening it as administrator?
EDIT: didn't notice it was two pages long the thread. and yes have 7 reformat your drive for you it will make its own system reserved.

I don't think activation is the issue with MSE, I've put MSE on non-activated clean installs with no problem.

Try finishing all your updates before installing MSE on your next install.

Here's some other steps to try as well,

I can't install Microsoft Security Essentials

After formatting the hard drive I installed fresh version of Windows 7 64-bit and everything has worked first time.

The issue must have started from the Dell version leaving something in the System Reserved partition of the hard drive, this must have been the issue.

Oh well the Dell version is clearly not to be used on an Acer machine as they state.

Many thanks to everyone for their help.

Mick

Hello MickHall75,
Glad to hear you have the issue fixed.

When installing Windows
- If the disk is Pre Partitioned, it will not create a System Reserved partition for the MBR (boot info).
- If the disk is not Pre Partitioned, it will create a System Reserved partition for the MBR (boot info).
Do you have a "System Reserved" partition now, after formatting and re-installing?

What might have happened is you had a Pre Partitioned HD with the System Reserved partition from the original installation.
Then when you re-installed (before formatting the HD), it put the new MBR (boot info) in the "C" partition.

But, what if anything did the install do to the previously used System Reserved partition?
Did it do a "Clean-Up", or did it leave some boot info there that might have caused your problem after the re-install?

I wonder if how a Windows re-install is done can cause problems for the Windows Installer on the new install ???
I'm not so sure it's really a "Dell version" (disc) causing the problem, or a "Re-install" problem no matter what disc is used...?
Having said that, I would always use (and recommend) using the latest Windows ISO for a Windows install.
Using the latest ISO will minimize the number of Windows Updates needed to get the "System up to date"...

My question is not directed at MickHall75, or any specific person...
Anyone who knows, please enlighten me - I'm curious and would like to know/learn.

I'm a "home-built type person" and I pre-partition a HD/SSD before installing Windows, so I don't have and never had a "System Reserved" or any OEM partitions...

Hi

Sorted that issue out but having the same issue again! I've downloaded the latest ISO from Digital River and installed Windows 7.

Every time I download a program be it adobe reader, security essentials or CCleaner all I get is an error message. When I was doing it last night it was reporting that the download was unsafe?

I've tried both IE and Chrome and both have the same issues. Some times you have to start the browser up again as it says there's no connection to the Internet.

I'm flummoxed on this one!

Help please,

Mick
