File couldnot open because it is either not a supported file type

Hi,
Good evening friends.
I have been Using windows 7 for a long time for engineering design & documentation purpose for last 5-6 years, , but for last 3-4 days, i have been facing a very typical problem, when i am trying to open PDF or XLSX files stored previously, not opening by giving a message that " File couldnot open because it is either not a supported file type or because file has been damaged (for example , it was sent as an email attachment and was not correctly decoded).The problem is only for PDF & XLSX files stored on my local Hard disk. It will be a very serious problem if i cant recover all the files stored.
Please help me out.

Welcome to the forum. Can you open files from other sources is USB or fresh download?

This problem is only with files already in computer HDD . Fresh files can open

You could try repairing office 2007. To do that follow this MS website.

If you are using Abobe Reader for your PDF files you can repair it as well.

Open Adobe Reader & click on the Help tab & select Repair Installation & run it.

If it is a "spinner" it may be a good idea to run a disk diagnostic. Usually the HD manufacturer has free diagnostic software for the drive available for download on their web site. Use Speccy to get the exact drive make/model.
