Can't open graphics from Windows explorer into psp

I have a newly set up windows 7, 64 bit computer. I have Paint Shop ProX installed. I have most of my graphics associated through windows7 to open into pspX. I also have the preferences in pspX to open graphics.

When I double click a graphic, whether gif, jpeg, psp, psd, pspimage...pspX program will open, but I get the message "There was a problem sending the command to the program".
I had to open a jpeg attachment in picture viewer, in order to see it. Could Microsoft have something against letting non MS programs over ride their own programs?
I have a friend who has the same windows7 and pspX program, but she does not have the problem.

I have checked online and found that people are having the issue with a multitude of programs, so I'm assuming it is not a psp problem. I have not been able to find an answer. Any ideas or suggestions.

Hi Grannyfox,
in the future, please don't use such big bolded/colored letters, I could barely concentrate on them and read the whole post.

PSP X is kinda old, I remember trying to use X3 on Win7 which AppHang'd Explorer to the point I had to do a hard restart. Not only that, but PSP (X3) generally seems to perform poorly, at least on my part.

What you can always do is set the compatibility mode to Vista or XP, run the program as admin and check make settings again, then see if they stick.

PROBLEM: Cannot open images in Paint Shop Pro when using Windows Explorer (Win 7, 64bit)
DETAIL: Error message "problem sending the command to the program"
SOLUTION: Here is what worked for me.

I know this response is coming in months after the original inquiry but I thought I would share what worked for me with this problem. I have been using Paint Shop Pro X successfully with Win 7, 64bit until this morning when I discovered (suddenly) that I could no longer click on an image in Explorer and have it load in PSP X. Instead, I received the "problem sending the command to the program" followed by the PSP application opening but no image appearing. I believe that a Windows update of some sort took place the night before - I remember seeing it shortly after shutting down, delaying the actual shut down process (only mentioning this because I'm not sure if it reset some things I'd done a custom set up on). Up until this morning, I wasn't experiencing this problem. Anyway, what I did was:

Right click on the PSP X icon, select properties, re-establish my administrative rights, but also UNCLICK the "Compatibility mode" check box AND unclick "run as an administrator" --both in the Compatibility panel under PSP X properties. I then clicked Apply and Okay, then re-opened a fresh Explorer window

I have not had a problem since.

I'm no Win 7 expert and to be honest, while I like some of the features, all of the compatibility/User rights mumbo jumbo often requires me to google more questions to find the right answers (and I usually don't find uniform solutions) than it does serve as a good, intuitive interface (and least for this 47 year old's intuition). Nonetheless, I know there are a lot of us out there that cannot replace all of our old software right away (and some software that we've mastered over the years still does its job so why change?). For older versions of Paint Shop Pro, which just today launched X4, hopefully this process will do the trick in restoring the click images in Win 7 Explorer and open in older versions of Paint Shop Pro process.

Just read your reply. I have resolved the issue, but to tell you the truth, I don't remember what the magic trick was. My 65+ brain doesn't keep all that stuff handy...lol
I know I searched online and asked psp friends and someone, somewhere, or maybe just me...tweaking this and that. Could have been the admin process, as I remember doing that, at some point.
So, all is well in my pspland.

'ruraldog' Thanks for your great solution. It worked for me using an unupdated Windows 8 64bits with Paintshop Pro 9.01. Why the message: "There was a problem while sending the command to the program." appeared I do not know. Earlier the program worked OK in Win8 but then today did not - until your fix was discovered. Thanks again.

Just goes to show WHY you need to keep old threads available in forums ... the re-upping admin rights on the security tab & unclicking compatability & admin on the compatability tab method solved this very annoying issue like a charm ... Thanks a bunch from 3 years later!!
