I will occasionally get a power point attachment and cannot open it. I have my associations set to Microsoft's Power Point software. I have also tried changing the association to Open Office's Impress and this doesn't work as well. Any suggestions

Okay, first off, which version of PowerPoint are you using? Also, in which software/webpage do you get the attachment? Outlook? Thunderbird? Hotmail? Gmail?

I tried the URLs that you suggested but I got a 404 error. Does the URL contain an error?

I am currently using Microsoft's Power Point Viewer, version 7.0. The attachments come in Thunderbird. The first response I got included 2 links and I have tried both. They are: http//www.winhelponline.com/blog/unable-to-open-pps-ppt-from-windows-mail-or-wlm/ and http://windowscp.mvps.org/ppsopen.htm

Those links still don't work, there are more than one type of file associated with

powerpoint, .pps; .ppt; and others, have you confirmed that the file extension of

what you are trying to open is correctly associated with powerpoint viewer?

Option two of this tutorial,

The power point that I've been trying to open is .pps and I have checked the file associations and .pps is associated with Microsoft's power point. I even tried to use Open Office's equivalent and it didn'r work either.

Change the filetype to .ppt (with Rename) and see whether that does anything.

To derekimo: I have used both double click and right click. To WHS: I recorded the file as it came in on Thunderbird and changed the suffix to ppt and when I tried to open it I got the message "this type of file cannot be opened by Power Point"

I had already set the association. In fact, I had changed it to see if Open Office would work, it didn't either.

Hello again, Bill. :)

I just came across this on the MozillaZine Knowledge Base:
Actions for attachment file types - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

Here is a quote from the troubleshooting section
(it's probably worth reading through the rest of the link, but I thought this might apply to your problem):
.
Removing all the settings for attachment-handling actions

If Thunderbird doesn't seem to be performing attachment-handling actions as it should, or if certain options are grayed out (not selectable) when they shouldn't be, and you can't resolve the issue as described above, it could be due to a corrupted "mimeTypes.rdf" file. Thunderbird uses this file to store your file-handling preferences for specified file types. Deleting it sometimes cures the problem. To do so:

  1. Exit Thunderbird if it is running.
  2. Recommended: make a temporary backup of your Thunderbird profile (or at least of the mimeTypes.rdf file).
  3. Delete mimeTypes.rdf from your Thunderbird profile folder.
  4. Restart Thunderbird to see if the problem has been fixed.

I'm beginning to think that I have a problem with my Power Point Reader. I went online and looked at some samples of Power Point presentations and I get an error message that I was not able tpo display the sample because my reader was not capable of displaying it. I'm going to download a newer version and see what happens. I'll let you know
