Can't Re-install Windows Media Player 12...

So I had previously disabled the Media Features in Windows 7... I just didn't need them because I use k-Lite. But recently I found out that I cant play WMV files; they simply freeze in Media Player Classic. However, they play fine in the Zune software. I figure this is because I disabled WMP12... so I figured I would re-install it in the Windows Features section.

However, I instead get an undefined error and it doesn't install. Is there a service required to re-install WMP? Or is there a way for me to play WMV files in MPC?

You could try running sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt, see if that fixes things.

Personally I would leave the installed codecs alone and move away from k-lite to windows 7 codecs. Unlike k-lite, the author of win7 codecs states that he does not replace any codec already installed but simple augments and adds to them.

Swarfega, I also encode videos into x264... so there is no way I could stick with just windows 7 codecs. I watch a lot of anime too, and those tend to be in odd formats.

But either way... I can't really install the windows 7 codecs without being able to install Windows Media Player first... can I?

I have the same problem, I disabled WMP and now can't get it back again, I am using Win7 Professional. All the right boxes are ticked in Turn Windows Features on and off. If I download WMP12 I get a message telling me that I have the wrong version of Win7. I did download WMP11 but when I tried to install I got a message telling me that WMP was already installed, but I can't find it. Can I put the installation disc in and do a repair without wiping my whole disc? OT: Is Swarfega really still on sale in the UK?

This is a bit of a roundabout way but if nothing else works...The idea is downgrade to WMP11.

If that works you can think of upgrading to WMP12, thus restore your WMP12.

Possible Solution

The DLL files associated with the Windows Media Player 12 in your system may have been modified or deleted manually or by some PC Utilities including registry repair or cleaners.

Check the DLL files that are related with the Player including WMPEncEn.dll, wmpeffects.dll, wmpdxm.dll, wmpcm.dll. They can be found in the folder C:\windows\syswow64\. Replace them, if possible.

Usually the system check tool, sfc / scannow is not able to detect these changes.

Try to uninstall the Player first by unchecking the box in the Turn Windows features on or off and then install it by checking it.

Replace the DLL files that I have enumerated afterwards, if the uninstall/install method will not repair the issue.
