Solved Card reader not functioning properly after downgrade from Windows 10

So I took advantage of the free upgrade to Win10 (in case I ever decide to switch), and immediately downgraded back to Win7.

When I insert a card it just doesn't do anything, no notification or anything. The only way I can get the built in card reader to work is by disabling it and re-enabling it in device manager.

It's enabled in the BIOS. It shows up in device manager. I've tried the drivers from Lenovo's site, tried the ones from Realtek's site and pretty much everything else I could find in searching. Nothing else has changed program wise that may interfere with it, that I can find. Not used for gaming or anything like that, just MS Office programs and a few other basic programs for work, but they have all been installed for a couple years at least.

Laptop:

Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530c
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Intel Core i7-3820QM
256GB SSD
1TB HD

Card reader has the P/N LS-8135P on it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello and welcome bbv mate first you are one of many many others who have down this in my view the wrong way. Personally I clone the 7 drive and use the clone to run an upgrade or try something like 10 and out of the ordinary stuff like a Linux dual boot for example and in case it goes south one just swaps back in the original drive.

Anyway back to your problem have you got all your data backed up somewhere because if you have you could try either a clean install or a factory reset and then install your data back in. I am hazarding a guess here that the trial with 10 has somehow corrupted the 7 system or at least left remnants that are now causing your issue because 10 would have installed drivers for the device for that system. Now are you sure it is a Realtek driver you need? because that sounds unusual to me for some reason as Realtek is usually I find deals with networking stuff.

Well thats the right driver, might be because that lappy didn't ship with Ultimate, and either a GPO or KIS is causing issue.

Try running msinfo32 and check for problem devices and for the KIS try disabling it for 15 minutes and see if that does make any difference.

As i suspected a counterfiet install,
You have an Acer product key on your Lenovo.
Suggest you use the factory reset option to revert to the Pro version it was shipped with.

NB
you will have to use the OEM sticker code.

 It came this way "upgraded" when I purchased it new in 02/2013. It has worked fine up until recently.

Why then would it work after disabling it and re-enabling it?

Thanks.

Because an activation exploit is in use.
The W10 upgrade then the downgrade is throwing up a fair few of these.
Whats on the OEM sticker thats the original set-up, and IF the Upgrade was legitimate IT would be showing as Retail in the report.

Hmmm...ok. Thanks for your help. Not sure I really want to mess with trying to restore everything at this point in time though.

Ok, well it appears it wasn't driver or Win 10 related, just coincidental timing. I've had a bad USB port for a while now, when I purchased the replacement USB port, the same seller had a card reader for $0.99 as well, so I ordered it up too. Just got done swapping both of them out and everything is good as new again.

Thanks again for all your help guys.
