Solved CD/DVD/BRD drive missing

Good morning, everyone.

I've got an interesting issue. Sony VGN-NW160J with a BRD drive that does not show under Computer, does not show in the Device Manager or under disk management.

The drive functions, as I can boot off a CD/DVD.

I have cleared the upper/lower filters.

I have ran Microsoft's automated fix.

The drive is still missing. No error codes in the device manager or in the event viewer.

Anyone got any ideas?

Couple of guesses here,

Does it show in disk manangement? Does it have a letter assigned to it?

I tried the reg file in the link provided, no joy. Most of the threads I look thru are resolved with upper/lower filter deletion, which normally works. This one's got me stumped.

Might want to look at this, see if any of it helps.

Lots of the same there. More upper/lower filter fixes.

Small update, tho.

Event Viewer is reporting an error 7026, that the driver for cdrom, even tho it is in startup, is not loading.

If I hook up an external CDROM drive, the drive functions and receives a drive letter

The internal drive does still function flawlessly outside of Windows..

Any ideas?

Another update.

Pulled the DVD drive out of another Sony that happened to use a SATA notebook CDROM drive, and it worked flawlessly as well.

Notebook's native drive is a Panasonic UJ130A

Unfortunately the Sony I pulled the other drive from is down for an HDD replacement at the moment and I have no other machine to test this drive in.

Anyone got any idea how to delete the drivers for the UJ130A so Windows can reinitialize the drive?

Bump? Anyone? Still staring this problem in the face.

I'd hate to order another $150.00 BR-drive if this one's not dead, and since I can boot off of it I don't think it's dead.

I'm going to see if I can get someone with more knowledge about this to help you.

Have you tried the registry patch from Sony found here: Sony eSupport - VGN-NW160J - Software Updates & Drivers

You can also find your chipset driver and other drivers there, one of which (especially the chipset driver) might resolve the issue.

Follow this procedure even if it makes no sense.

Your CD or DVD drive cannot read or write media

Petey's solution resolved the problem. It was the registry patch from Sony. Amazing how it can be the smallest thing.

Now, I'd like to see what it changed in the registry. Release notes would've been nice, Sony!
