Anak, thanks for all the advice /assistance its always best to get correct advice before plunging in !!!!
modified the reg values as per (samlogic 91) /rebooted / and got the same issue as before . The hex value altered to what both you have and the article .
Now have restored the value to original and have no option but to do a clean install ,and back up files from Acronis and my ext hard drive . Many thanks from the other side of the world.

Anak ,just another bloody issue , see attached . You may well be correct ,couldnt load net start shellhwdetection.

I see you did use an elevated command prompt. C:\Windows\system32>

Error 1058 will generate if the shellhwdetection is disabled and because we both have a version of 7 that doesn't include Group Policy it has to be done manually.

Did you go to Services to see how it was set? Here's mine at the bottom:


If it is disabled it is easy to change, you can follow the link above to Services and use Option One step 6.

Or the "Error 1058" error message is displayed when a service suddenly stops Scroll down to "Resolution" and click on Windows 7 Windows Vista and you will see the same as in the tutorial.


You will also need to check on three other services that need set to Automatic in order for shellhwdetection to work properly. the links in the quote are from the Black Viper site and he has them set to open to the win8 tab, so make sure you click on the win7 tab for the proper settings:

Scroll through your Services Window to each service listed and see that they are also set to Automatic and (Started).

Once you have everything set properly restart your machine and try using your optical drive.

   Tip

There is a link in the Tip section of the Services tutorial that takes you to the » Black Viper’s Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Service Configurations You may want to go over all of your Services settings, I found it was easier to print out the list and use that as a handbook when checking mine.

Since you have Home Basic, concentrate on the Home Basic column. I highlighted mine for the Home Premium OS that I have.
