Should my DVD Read?Write reader be able to read a CD disk please? I bought a camera this morning camera and the operating instructions are on a CD, not a DVD. Is the there a way ove being able to read this disc using my current computer set up please?

Yes, you should be able to read a CD in a DVD drive. Have you tried it?

The drive uses different lasers for DVDs and CDs, so if you have a hardware problem, it's possible that it will not read CDs while still able to read DVDs. I belive that it's also possible to get that problem due to an error in WIndows, although I've never see it personally.

One way to check would be to try to start up the machine using a bootable CD.

CD's should read OK on a DVD reader. If this is a DVD burner, it will also burn CD's.

Whilst waiting for someone to answer my plea for help, I contacted Dell Tech Support who took remote control of my computer and discovered I had a corrupt CD/DVD driver. He went into the innards of the software and put it right at a cost of £29-00. So that part of it, all is well. I can now read CD's and build a play list from ITunes.

Thing is, how did he do that and how can I repair or download an uncorrupted diriver to over ride the existing one, rectify the fault should it happen again thus sving myself another £29-00??

The ONLY drivers for CD/DVD drives (of any type) is the default built in Windows/Microsoft drivers.

I suspect there was another problem but that is what you were told.

Yes Fireberd you are of course right, I was told that by the guy at Dell in India, a corrupt driver, but my question was, how can I rectify the problem if it occurs again without having to go through to India. Should I go to the Fix Windows7 Drivers site link that was attached to your reply and if so, will that find the corrupt driver and sort it all out please??

Depends on what the actual problem is. On some problems just "uninstalling" the drive in the Device Manager and then restarting the PC (and Windows will reinstall) will fix those. There is another common problem with the upper/lower filters in the registry. These are the most common drive problems.

The Microsoft fixit MAY help but to be truthful, I haven't seen it really fix a lot of problems.

Thanks for your reply. I just had a look at my Device Master and found that the driver for my DVD/CD Rom R/W is titled HL-DT-ST DVD +-RW GH50N. Am I right in thinking that if I uninstall the item above the hightlighted one, (showin in tha attached screen shot) as it is missing when the driver becomes corrupt, then shut down the computer and do a restart, Windows would automatically reinstall the missing drivers and all would be well? It would be nice if that was the case and less expensive too!

HL-DT-ST DVD +-RW GH50N isn't the driver, that is the Device Name and you'd want to uninstall that IF there is a problem. Don't try it as a science experiment.

Thanks for your response, much appreciated. I am trying to find out how, if DVD/ CD Rom R/W goes AWOL again to get it back without having to phone Dell Tech Support in India and pay £29-00. I did so last night and their Tech guy (in India) was magic and had it all sorted out in a few minutes by taking remote control of my computer. I suspect something like that is not possible via WF7, but is there not another way of solving the problem please and if so, what is it and how do I go about it??

The fix depends on what the actual problem is.

Since you have a Dell XPS8300 (not XP8300 that you list in the My System Specs), there is a Dell users forum with some very knowledgeable users helping users (and its free). That is a good resource to get problems resolved.

Thanks for that, I will have a looksee. I don't remember quoting any computer identity code but it must have come from somewhere. How did you find out I had an XPS8300 and not an XP8300?? Not a problem for me however, it is strange and if you know that much, what else do you know about?

Thanks for that Doc, I have printed the tutorial and will have a look at it to make sure I get the installation correct. Not being a computer buff, I want to make sure I get it all right.

Does this mean that if I get another DVD/CD Rom Driver hiccup I would be able to let someone who knows about these things take control of my computer and sort it out please?? Are there many people who participate in WF7 who will do this sort of thing??

I have downloaded Team Viewer and as you will no doubt have seen, have got the problem sorted. Having said that, it has happened before and I don't know why, another mystery. I would like to thank you though for your help and advice and yes, you were absolutely right, I do have an XP8300, I found the Service Tag and all the data stuck to the top of the computer case!
