Is it bad that my cell phone resting place is right next to my external hd?
I just noticed too that my bose computer speaker is very close to the hd as well, do these devices have magnets that will negatively affect the hd?

Yes, they have magnets. The speaker ones are likely more powerful. Don't know if they'll significantly affect your HD, but I would guess probably not. Better safe than sorry though, so just don't get them too close, if you can help it.

Makes me remember an experiment done long ago (w95). Upgraded a (good working) HD to a larger one. Then did a test with the old one (no real use for it), had a very powerful magnet (from a large speaker) and did my best to try to destroy\erase the HD content. Put it back in the pc for testing, worked fine, booted like before and all files were still intact, no sign of damage whatsoever. Made me relax regarding HDs and normal external magnetism sources.
