I have a laptop running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. When I run ipconfig/all I see that its ip address is the same as that of another PC on my home wireless network. Where and how do I change this laptop's ip address to a different one? Thank you.

additional information:
This is a home wireless network running behind a router.

I went to the network connections and the tcpip ipv4 properties for the W 7 laptop which shows both the general and alternate tabs are blank and set to Obtain an IP address automatically. Is the present ip address set by the router?

Every now and then I lose internet connectivity which is why I am trying to figure it out. In most cases, W7 troubleshoot restores internet connectivity.

If they were the same IP they wouldnt be able to connect to the internet. Are you by chance running IPv6 in homegroup?

Can you post a snip of the out put from ipconfig /all ????

Thank you howling wolves. I think #4 post helped.

Maybe I am not using the correct words. My router is set to allow ips in a certain range only. Could that be why I occasionally lose internet access? Because the isp (Cox) is assigning an ip outside the router's range?

I find wlans very confusing!

We keep crossing each other messages. Yes I intermittently lose internet access.

You are correct. When I go the site you suggest, my ip address is something totally different.

I was referring to the 192.168.1.100(Preferred) in the ipconfig I posted. This is a home wlan with 3 PCs and 2 (one W7 and one XP) have 192.168.1.100 in their ipconfigs

Have you tried to unplug router and then plug back so it would reset. Same numbers auto assigned by a router is a router problem.

Unpluging and repluging the router always does it but that soon gets old because this happens several times a day (or hour). More info that could be helpful. When Windows cannot repair the internet access it tells me The DNS server is not responding. So maybe it is Cox's DNS server that is flaky. Could that be?

What router do you have? Have you restricted IP addresses or anything like that? Are you letting the router assign IP addresses, or do you use static IP addresses?

Thanks for helping. It was some kind of misconfiguration of the router on my part. I reset the router to factory settings, re-entered all my settings including WPA2, etc. and now all works fine. So far so good.
