Hi,

Is there any tested way, except for manual resource replacement, for changing the logon screen?

Tried LogonStudio for Vista, but it doesn't work when trying to open custom images :/

Thx

My Computer

OS
Microsoft Windows 6.1 (Build 6801)
Nevermind, changed it manually:

0) login as administrator, Run->"takeown/f %systemdir%\imageres.dll"

1) get latest version of resource replacer from here: h__p://angusj.com/resourcehacker

2) open file %systemdir%\imageres.dll

3) open branch "IMAGE", then "5031" and "1033"
here you will see your default windows logon screen image

4) click on "1033" with right-button and choose "replace resource"

5) "Open file with new resource" and find your 1280x1024 jpeg wallpaper (use Paint for file conversion, if needed)

6) Fill in "Resource Type" field with "IMAGE"

7) Fill in "Resource Name" field with "5031"

8) Fill in "Resource Language" field with "1033"

9) Press replace button and save the file

10) Press ctrl+alt+del to check the logon screen :)

Caution:
1) You might get error while saving the new file as the old one might be in use firing the access violation error. The best way is to boot-up a live cd/usb and replace the file from there or schedule a replacement batch on reboot.

2) If your replaced image is not shown immediately after you pressed "Replace" button and the tool hangs for a minute or so and you see array of numbers, then your image contains metadata and needs conversion through Paint.

Anyone know how to edit windows 7's imageres.dll from windows xp pro x86?

When I open the file with reshacker, nothing is displayed, no trees or anything

When I go to the file properties (From XP) there is no Security tab..

Help! :(

EDIT***For anyone else trying to do this
I never found a way to get reshacker to read imageres.dll when logged onto XP

I got the Security Tab Back by disabling Simple File Sharing

I had to use Vista to edit the imageres.dll with reshacker

I then emailed the modified file to myself

Booted up XP and took ownership of E:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll

Downloaded my modified dll and REPLACED the one in the Windows 7 installation

Everything works fine now, got rid of the startup sound and changed the welcome screen.

Why so much trouble just to change the boot screen? They should make it as easy as changing the wallpaper or screensaver, like make LogonStudio for 7 build into the OS.

True, but those are third party applications. I was thinking of one really build-in into Windows 7. Something very simple. Like just right-click on your desktop and click Personalize. Wouldn't it be great if there is an option "Change Welcome Screen" beside the Screensaver?

If so, welcome screens will be included in the .themepack that you create to share themes. Right now, you can only store wallpapers and sounds into it.

I'm pretty sure there will be, maybe not in that exact location though. Build 7000 was a bit more difficult to change the welcome screen, build 7100 was much easier (Thanks to the .reg file and guide on this forum). I tried to use the same method with my build 7000 but it didn't work, so I just went back to my working modified imageres.dll
