Check Disk after Adobe Update

I have Acrobat Pro on my HP laptop and was prompted to download an update, which I did. I did not allow automatic restart because I was working on something at the time. About an hour ago I re-booted and the "Checking File System on C:" (etc) message came up. I decided to let the system check the disk but it does not seem to have progressed past the initial screen (the one that ends with "To skip disk Check, press any key.."). Also, I have NOT seen the light indicating the hard drive is in use blinking at all.

I am hesitant to perform a hard turn-off but don't want to wait all day to use the machine as the one I'm on now is sub-optimal.

Questions:

(1) Is my machine "frozen" or is it normal for check disk to stay at this screen with no progress indicators and no hard drive activity?

(2) If potentially OK, about how long does it take for the check to perform? (about 180 gig of data and programs)?

(3) If frozen,

(a) What damage might I do if I perform a hard turn-off?

(b) Is there another way to unfreeze the machine?

(c) If I perform a hard-turn off, and the machine wants to do a check disk again at re-boot, should I abort or try letting it run again.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob

1-if no HD light probably frozen.

2-whether ok, or not abt 1-2 hours or less.

3-a)anything from nothing to total failure. BACKUP

b) nope

c)it will want to do a chkdsk at every boot till you do.
