Checkdsk hangs with 'artifact-like' screen

My checkdsk /r ran relatively quick, because I had windows 7 reinstalled only a few days go and I also formatted that partition. It's a laptop and the HD isn't that large, I guess around 250GB.

It repaired the hiberfil.sys in step 4 and completed that step.

At step 5, free space check, it hangs at 82 procent and the whole screen got 'weird'. It shows colored letters through the regular letters and they blink slightly. Some of the white letters themselves colored.
It has an artifact feel but with words instead of graphics.

What can I do? And is this a safe point to reboot or is step 5 just as critical to the filesystem?
If so: what to do?

This is Win7 64 bit home premium (Dutch, as is the checkdsk language. The weird colored letters are non existing words, so these aren't dutch or anything).

Hello Venuz and welcome to Seven Forums.

Just a couple of random thought of things to consider in no particular order:

1. Since you had Windows 7 reinstalled just a few days ago, perhaps the installation was damaged or corrupted. You could try reinstalling again.
2. Yes, you could cancel the chkdsk at step 5. You could then try running it from Safe Mode.
3. Hard drive damaged.
4. Run chkdsk but do not check either option. See if it runs all the way through. Step 5 this tutorial.

Perhaps others will jump in with other suggestions.
