CHKDSK at startup, getting "File recored segment XXXXX is unreadable."

Good day! I'm currently helping my uncle with his laptop (Acer Aspire 5742Z) running on Windows 7 with a problem stated at the title. I've tried waiting for it to finish up which took a couple of hours but go a BSOD moments after trying to login through windows so after it restarted I canceled the CHKDSK this time and was able to get through windows but everything was running very slow that I could barely open My Computer. I've also read that it could be a hardware failure but I hoping that's not our case so I was wondering if there's a proper fix for this. I'm not a computer specialist but I do understand some bits and pieces so I apologize in advance if I don't get some terms you might be saying. Hope you guys can help me out thanks in advance!

I am afraid your laptop's hard disk is failing hard. The only thing that might help is a complete CHKDSK check ("Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors"), preferably by removing it from the laptop and attaching it to a working PC via a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adaptor or via a good USB disk enclosure.

If the disk is successfully checked then you can clone it immediately on a new 2.5" hard disk and put it in the laptop. If you are lucky, the system files might be intact and you will have saved your Windows installation and your data.

If the disk fails CHKDSK, then you have to give up and make a full Windows install on a new hard disk. If you need data from the old hard disk, you can attach it to the laptop via a USB enclosure and you might get all or part of your data. Good luck!

I would Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD.

Thank you both of you for taking the time to reply. I may have to try the method you explained Mits hopefully it'd work somehow otherwise it's time for my uncle to buy a new pc then. And as for the OEM recovery disk, I'm pretty sure my unlce didn't bother to do that one so I guess that would be out of the picture. Again thanks for you help and have a nice day!
