check disk is giving me "File record segement xxxxx is unreadable"

Hi everybody,

The title says it all. My dad was using the computer to watch some videos online when Mozilla Firefox froze. Then I tried to get into the task manager using Ctrl+Alt+Del and that wouldn't work. Tried right clicking the taskbar and going into task manager and that didn't work either. So I just shoved the power button to turn off the computer, and turned it back on. It hung on the "Starting Windows" screen for a while, then it launched into check disk. It scanned for a bit, then said "File record segment 2xxx is unreadable" and it kept going until about 58%, then it just kept giving "File record segment 3xxxx is unreadable" and kept going up until "File record segment 44139 is unreadable". Then it said something about index errors and the computer reboot. Now it says "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". Does anyone have any insight?

So I threw in my windows 7 CD to try and repair the startup, but it didn't work. Now the computer rebooted and is going through check disk again. I already switched the SATA ports on the motherboard. Is there anything anyone can suggest?

Alright, looks like it recovered some stuff, said something about orphan files. Windows 7 booted up now, and I used Speccy and Crystal DiskInfo to check the drive and both said the drive was healthy. I ran WesternDigital's drive checker and that came back with a pass too. What's going on?

Sorry, missed your posts lat week.

From what you describe, the file system got corrupted somehow. This is usually caused by powering off the computer by pressing and holding the power button so Windows does not get a chance to close all files and do an orderly shutdown. A power outage can also cause this.
