I have a C: drive from another machine (lets call it disk L: that is not booting and I am wondering if I can set the chkdsk to the drive L: as I cannot think of any other way to do this test. The drive in question is a C: driver from an older machine hooked up to one of my machines via a USB to SATA adaptor.

Thanks Brian I will try that after the Seagate scan has finished. The strange things is I cannot find the files the owner wants either on the drive or the clone I made of it. It only shows sort cuts to them and I am wondering now if they are not telling me something:huh:

Are you trying to "boot" Computer A using the boot drive (C) from Computer B?

Well if that is the case, beside mostly likely being illegal, the drivers would be totally different and would not be surprising it does not boot.

If you just want to run chkdsk on this drive, then if the drive appears under Computer (or Disk Management), you can right-click on it, select Properties > Tools > Error Checking.

Or you can open an elevated command prompt and enter chkdsk l: /r

Yep well more to the point it is illegal as the activation code on that old drive is tied to the original motherboard in OEM's at least and unless Microsoft take pity on you (and usually they are pretty good for a genuine reason) and let you use the old drive on another motherboard then you will have grief. The retail version is allowed three installs unless I am really wrong but you still have to get the go ahead from Microsoft.

it is illegal as the activation code on that old drive is tied to the original motherboard in OEM's
No, it is illegal because it violates the terms of the license agreement we agreed to abide by.

It is important to note we don't own the software, we own the license to use it. And it is really the license for OEMs that is tied to the "O"riginal "E"quipment. We, as users and owners of that license, agreed to abide by the terms of the license (EULA) when we first decided to keep using that license on the original equipment when we booted it up the first time and clicked, "I agree". And THAT is what makes it legally binding in a court of law.

The ONLY legal way you can transfer an OEM license to a different motherboard/computer is when the motherboard is replaced with an identical motherboard from the same maker (or recommended replacement board from same maker if original model number is no longer available) as part of a repair action should the first board fail.

You cannot transfer an OEM when "upgrading" the motherboard. You can upgrade any other component any number of times, but not the motherboard. A new motherboard is considered a new computer for licensing purposes. And that makes sense considering the motherboard is the "mainboard", the heart and soul of the computer.

The retail version is allowed three installs unless I am really wrong but you still have to get the go ahead from Microsoft.
No, you can legally transfer a retail license as many times as you want - AS LONG AS you totally uninstall Windows from the old computer first - typically without ever having to contact Microsoft.

The other primary difference between OEM/System Builders and full Retail licenses (besides OEM's costing less) is Microsoft is required to provide 1 year of Windows tech support with Retail licenses and the builder is responsible to provide Windows tech support for OEMs. So if you build your own computer using an OEM license, you, as the System Builder, are Windows tech support for 1 year!

As far as the old drive on a new motherboard, you may still be in for some major grief as Windows on the old drive will still be expecting, and configured for all the old hardware devices from the old computer, especially the dozens of devices integrated into the motherboard. If lucky, Windows will still boot, but it is common in these cases for Windows to choke big time. Personally, I prefer a clean install of Windows and my apps, then just copy the current backup of all my personal files to the new installation. This process is much less likely to result in corrupt drivers, less clutter on our drives and in our Registries, and trouble free performance.

That is easy too because we all have current backups of all the data we don't want to lose, right? Right???

Well I beg to differ I did install Windows for my brother I the UK when he rather foolishly bought a second hand Dell disk and Microsoft were more than obliging when activating it.

I do know a little about the process as I have done a few builds and refurbs and what I was doing was hooking up the old C: drive (L:) to my machine and attempting to run a chkdsk on it because the drive in it's machine was not booting.

It is also my understanding too that a retail can only be installed a few times and not an indefinite number of times but I stand to be corrected.

Perhaps I should have been a little more explicit.

Not sure what you mean here. I said you can upgrade any component, except the motherboard, and still be in compliance with the EULA.

And I did NOT say it cannot technically be done. I said legally. And to that, in terms of contracts and license agreements, if all parties agree to amending the terms, then that too is legal. So if you call MS, are truthful as to why you are transferring the license, and they allow it, then great! But if you attempt to deceive MS and circumvent the agreement just because the software technically lets you, that does not make it legal.

You can speed, not use your turn signals, or run a stop sign and most likely will not get caught. It is still not legal.

It is also my understanding too that a retail can only be installed a few times and not an indefinite number of times but I stand to be corrected
Yeah, that is not true. If you transferred the Retail license too many times, you may have to call MS to authenticate if they (or their computers) think it may still be installed on multiple computers. But once you provide the key, they can see it is a retail license. They may ask if it is installed on more than one computer, and if the answer is "no", they will authorize authentication.

Note too, this is NOT just a MS thing. All "OEM" software is the same. But you rarely find OEM software on new computers that does not come from MS these days.

The bottom line is it is illegal to use an OEM/System Builders license that came with or was purchased for one computer on another computer. A disk “branded” with a computer maker’s brand name, or is labeled with “OEM", "OEM/System Builder”, “Upgrade”, “Academic Edition”, or "For Distribution with a new PC only", is not transferable to a new PC (or upgraded motherboard) under any circumstances. These OEM licenses are inextricably tied to the "original equipment". And most importantly, as users, we agreed to the terms of the end-user licensing agreement (EULA) when we decided to continue to use the software on the original computer. And that makes it legally binding.

Ok I am not really wanting to keep on going re the whys and wherefores oflicence agreements. All I know is that even if you could use an activation toomany times beit OEM or retail somewhere along the line Microsoft are going tobe a tad curious as to what you are doing with so many installs.

The OEM issue - it did occur to me that your statement re only using thesame brand and model MB for a particular OEM would and probably is somethingthat is not going to happen because I cannot imagine for one minute someonebuying say eight or nine boards because they have all gone wrong.

My brothers issue was the Dell factory disk was a shambles and only throughthe generosity of Microsoft and me using the ISO from Greg’s tutorial was Iable to get the Windows installed.

Right! And as I noted, MS can easily tell if using a Retail license by your key codes, then precede with the authentication, or not accordingly.

The OEM issue - it did occur to me that your statement re only using thesame brand and model MB for a particular OEM would and probably is somethingthat is not going to happen
Replacing a failed motherboard with the same brand and model happens all the time with computers still under warranty. And that is perfectly legal. What is not legal is "upgrading" the motherboard (or say, going from Intel to AMD CPU boards) because the user wants to.
I cannot imagine for one minute someonebuying say eight or nine boards because they have all gone wrong.
Me either. At least not a private individual. But a big company that buys 200 or 300 computers in one purchase might, if 8 or 9 boards failed during the warranty period. The point being, the same terms of the license apply - whether you represent a big corporation, or just yourself.

Well I agree the large companies yes but in my instance the MB I have in my Ivy Bridge is very hard to get out here and I don't like resorting to Ebay or overseas because of time constraints or dodgy deals .

I don't remember stating one could change motherboards only that my brother was allowed to use the laptop with an activation code given to us very generously by Microsoft after explaining his predicament.

I think we have got off on the wrong foot and I suspect because of my badly worded first post.
Like I said I am no expert but have been doing this for some time to have a rudimentary grasp of the system and I hope we can conclude on that note because debating this over and over again is not what I suspect we both want.

I don't buy from Ebay for that reason too.

And again, if users call MS, explain the situation and they authorize it, no problem.

And I am not trying to debate this side issue either - my only goal is to explain the facts as they are defined in our EULAs so you and others can make an informed decision.

Well like so many others I have to admit I don't fully read the EULA's but do a have a fair understanding of the rules that I have picked up from the more knowledgeable members in this forum. I know the rules enough to explain to others who don't but obviously not in the depth that you can.
Anyway it seems that we got off on a bit of a wrong foot as I took your reply as a bit of a lecture or telling your grandmother how to suck eggs and well at my age I shouldn't take it as a personal thing.
Personally I prefer hardware problems as I have been into electronics since I was a very young fellow and do this as a hobby and retirement activity - the in depth software side of things I am still not that good at but do my best using what I know to refurb machines for those who cannot afford one and fixes for anyone who asks at home or work.
Anyway I had better stop wafting on and hope that we can work together with the others within the forum to the benefit of those who are not so clued up or in need:)
John

Gentlemen this is how I keep it my 3 brain cells.

Retails are easy.
You can move Window 7 around from computer to computer as long as it is only on one (1) at a time.

The hard one OEM.
The problem arises when you have a faulty motherboard and replace it.
I had this happen. I replace the 3 months old motherboard (RMA) with a exact motherboard. I still had to call Microsoft to get it activated. It didn't take long and went smoothly.

Now a bigger problem. You need to replace the motherboard but the exactly one is not available. Therefore you have to upgrade. Now you really have to sweat talk Microsoft and at that point it's pot luck whether they will okay it.
From what I have got from other it's kind of a time judgment
on Microsoft part. If you had use of the motherboard and the operating system for years they lean to not okay the swap with a OEM COA.

That is the way I understand it and have went through it.

Yes Jack I agree it is my own simplistic view on it and my brothers case was purely out of luck on the day when the Microsoft fellow I spoke to was more than helpful with helping us out with a crap Dell disk my not so clued up brother had bought on Ebay.
He let me use the ISO from Gregs tutorial and gave us an activation code as well so like you say it depends on the person you speak with and I think generally speaking if you are not greedy and explain the predicate and be truthful then they are really understanding.
If one got stroppy with them then of course they are not going to come to the party - depends on your people skills ;)

You got it! But, if you tell MS the truth and explain the old board failed and this new board is part of a required "repair" action and not an "elective" upgrade because you just want newer stuff, MS will approve it with no sweet talking (or sweat! ;)) - or always has with me.

But also, MS knows that motherboard makers are constantly coming out with new models and retiring old models. So if you "upgrade" to the model recommended by the same maker as a suitable replacement for your old board, that too is fine and MS will approve it.

as I took your reply as a bit of a lecture
@ICit2lol - I too have been in electronics support for many years as a formally trained technician (since the early 70s). And have been "working" tech support forums for close to 15 years. I have taught electronics and trained many technicians.

Forums, by definition, are places where EVERYONE - current and future readers - can participate (or just listen in). Forum discussions are NOT one-on-one conversations. So when a question is asked, I answer to the crowd, not the individual.

So while I am answering you, I do try to speak to everyone (which includes advanced experts to total newbies). And to that, yes, it is a "bit of a lecture" - going by the first definition listed there.

My apologies if it sounded like the second definition. It is not intended that way.

Look just a quick one as my machine is losingposts and what is doing it I have no idea. But apology accepted and I know thatI may have jumped the gun. In reality I work as a Registered Nurse but have hada fascination with electronics for many years starting with vacuum tubes theninto transistors and onto IC's. Most of my stuff was audio based but with aload of gadgets such as battery condition indicators for the bike when I hadit.

Computing now is my perhaps only hobby / interest/ retirement activity as I wrecked my shoulder gold prospecting and bike ridingis out as is woodwork.

I don't know if you noticed but I did send afriendship request - not that you have to accept but for me it is all about usworking together.
