I am running a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit computer. I used to be able to run chkdsk with no problem. For some reason when I now run chkdsk, I get the countdown from 9 to 0 and the system then boots Windows 7 Home Premium. It will not run chkdsk. Any help will be appreciated.

Which partition are you trying to run chkdsk on? Is it the windows partition? Are you able to 'chkdsk' on other disks/partition?

I am using the Windows partition and it is my only partition.
Chkdsk works OK for my backup drive D: from the command prompt. I can't do the same with the C: drive because it is in use. I set chkdsk to run at my next startup. I start my computer and it states that a chkdsk is scheduled and it start counting down in seconds so that it can be stopped from running if desired. I get the countdown and when it get to 1, I get an error message, chkdsk does not run and my Windows system boots up. The error message is so fast I can't get a chance to read it. The computer is working fine with only this indicated problem. Chkdsk was working great and I believe it quit working after a Windows update. Thanks for the help this far.

Ezio, I followed your directions and sfc/scannow did not find any problems.
I kept trying to run chkdsk and I finally got an error message. It states a program I installed caused chkdsk not to run. A solution was stated to run System Restore from the latest restore point and keep restoring to earlier restore points until chkdsk runs. To date I have gone back 5 restore dates and have not found the offending program.
I am going through all programs I may have installed that is causing me this problem.
If and or when I find a solution I will post the results here.

Thank you Ezio. I did a "clean startup" before I posted my message on this forum. It did not show any problems which tells me that the error I got when running "chkdsk" is not the problem. The error message was in "error" I have to say.
Lately I was informed that a file named "autochk.exe could be corrupted. This file is located in the "Windows system 32" directory. autochk.exe is where chkdsk starts running at computer startup. I obtained the file from a working chkdsk computer from my son. I renamed the original file old_autochk.exe and placed the one my son sent to me in its place.
It did not work even though the file he sent me was identical in size. As a result I am still working on a solution.

I finally found a solution to enable me to run “chkdsk” once again. Having a problem with my “Norton” virus protection resulted me finding a cure to my “chkdsk” problem. My Norton virus protection began to give me problems and would stop scanning my files. Somehow by accident, I downloaded “Microsoft Security Essentials” and it installed on my computer. I never ran the the program and never realized it was interfering with “Norton.” I know that two security programs don't get along and should not reside on the same computer.
I deleted “Microsoft Security Essentials” and this cured the problem with Norton and also cured the “chkdsk” problem. The “chkdsk” problem is now completely gone. Finally “chkdsk” runs to perfection.
I want to thank all who gave me advice to help cure a problem.
