Hi,

Just received my newegg order which was mainly cables and a Internal HD Docking station both 2.5 & 3.5 Drives.

I also bought the DVD Civilization V, but when I went to install, it insisted installing/linking itself to Steam. I have steam due to getting free games, otherwise I wouldn't have installed.

I bought the disc just for the reason to play it without any steam connection.

Is there a way to re-install to HD from the DVD and not have Civilization interface with steam? Please keep in mind Steam is very new too me.

Thnx! :D

there's no getting around steam i'm afraid.

saying that, steam isn't a problem - it's a good way of getting auto-update patches (i think the first big patch came a few days ago), and stat tracking, and doesn't use many resources (apart from your wallet :p).

if you lose or damage your disc later, you can always download it again from steam - or even better, you can backup all your (patched) game files to your hd for future use, so you can throw the disc away. (i was hoping the box set would include a printed manual, as you have historically needed them for civ games, but this game is so simple, you don't need a manual at all. :()

you don't have to be online to play the game either - you can start steam in an offline mode if it bothers you that much - but there's no need to be afraid of steam.

Thanks for the info, guess it the way the cookie crumbles these days. I did see the update links for each game and agree that really makes it easy and makes for multilayer games easier I'm sure. So I should get used to steam and take what it has to offer, I guess.

I have other games from CD /DVD that currently are not linked to steam, but I believe could be. Would it be wise to link all possible games already installed to steam?

Thnx Mic ;D

i've only tried adding a non-steam game once, and it didn't seem to be worthwhile, as you won't get the auto-patching and archiving benefits of 'native' steam games.

all you will get is a shortcut in your steam games library - which is probably less use than a standard windows shortcut.

personally i've got all my game shortcuts on a quicklaunch toolbar for easy access.

As already explained you need to have STEAm for it work, even the retail DVD.

BTW, did your retail copy come with any bonus content?
Mine had a exclusive Americas map, which I believe is exclusive to retail DVDs.

At any count, after you install Civ V, STEAM will download the free Ghengis Khan DLC, and patch the game to the current version.

At that point, remember to claim your bonus content.
At the top of the main steam window choose:
Games --> Activate a product on STEAM
Put in your Bonus Key, and STEAm will activate and DL your extra content.

Since everything is permanatly tied to your account, you need only do this once.

You can re-install later from the DVD if you need or want to, and STEAM will automatically DL the DLC and extras you have activated at the end of the installation.
Activation is a one time process.

Thanks for replyng,

Yes it did come with the map and a small game booklet. Purchased from Newegg. Also after the install, steam went right to work on updating it. I didn't watch the whole process, but it was quick.

I'm not sure about this Bonus Key, only key I found was to install the game on the back of the booklet, but I'll see if theres any free extras on it. Railworks2 did, so I think I know where your coming from.

(But just in case, I'm printing out your post. Thanks for the free-bee's info, hope I can get them).

Thnx

Mine had a little sticker on the front of the box that said
"Exclusive: Cradle of Civiliztion Pack:The Americas"

There was the obvious main activation key code on the back of the manual, but also a little card stuffed inside the manual referncing the map pack with a second Key code.

Perhaps I was wrong about this being exclusive to Retail discs, and was just a limited thing. :(
I just assumed it was, apologies.

If you do not see anything on the very front of the box, it may not have been included with your particular copy.

Thats Odd that Newegg wouldn't have same retail DVD. Mine has no such "Bonus Sticker" on the box and no card or slip of paper with bonus content. But like I said, it did install the one extra DL referred to earlier.

Also opened up the actual map (or what I thought was a map) and it's titled "TECH TREE AND SPECIFIC CHARTS", so I guess thats not the same as what you got, "The America's Map" ?

So I guess Neweeg Retail is not the same as store retail, ...dunno Ohh well, Maybe a heavy google search will return this "Americas Map" for download. I'm sure its big, but its worth a shot. Thnx
