I have a dirty secret. I've never cleaned my computer. Sure, I've dusted my monitor, but I haven't taken off the cover or tried to reach the crumbs lurking inside my keyboard.

"Your computer could fry if you don't keep it clean," says Jonathon Millman, chief technology officer for Hooplah Interactive.

Dust clogs the vents behind your computer, which causes your CPU to heat up—and heat is the biggest cause of component failure in computers. Regular cleaning could save you costly maintenance fees down the road.

Keep your computer in tip-top shape by following Millman's guide to a spotless computer system.

As soon as I saw the thread title - I immediately wanted to say 'No, you clean your computer...'

nah, I'm not naturally adverse to directions at all... :p

There's some good and sound advice there. Not a single mention of vacuuming inside a PC ;)

Probably not the vacuuming itself, more likely static discharge, as vaccums are usually dragged along carpet all the time. I have vaccumed some before without issue. Now I just take it outside, put a dust mask on and used compressed air.

If you get a nice case which includes dust filters....the inside of your PC can actually stay very nice and clean. I have an Antec P182 case for my box and this is what the CPU fan looks like after about 9 months of use without 1 single cleaning session thanks to my air filters;

Looks like it's $145 on Newegg, Newegg.com - Antec P182 Gun Metal Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case. Good looking case with a good design, though I've always been wary of cases with doors that close off any front end air intake. My COOLER MASTER Praetorian 730 has a door on the front panel as well, but I always leave it open. Along with the side panel, since my giant heatsink is too tall =\. It's a dusty mess after a couple weeks, lol.

The P182 pulls air in from the sides of the front door and across the screens. The Antec P183...has holes in the door on the front for pulling in air.

I'm running a Q9550 with a small overclock from 2.83Ghz to 3.20Ghz, on the stock Intel air cooler, with 8GB of RAM, and a 9800GTX+ video card and it's cool as a cucumber inside of my case. My CPU idles between 32-34 celcius.

Quite often having the sides of front removed actually interferes with proper air flow through the case and out the back and can actually raise temperatures. It's worth looking at.
