Solved Cloned Win7 disk now its "not genuine"

Hi, I’m having problems after cloning my Win7 Ultimate x64 student upgrade.

Recently my HDD has started to show signs of failure, so I bought a new 1TB WD drive.

Cloned Win 7 disk using Paragon 9, and proceeded to use the new drive.

All was fine for a day or so, then I got “This copy of windows is not genuine” on the desktop.

I checked Control Panel> System and the product ID had gone as well as the option to change the product key.

It’s a genuine upgrade copy of Win7, I have the product Key.

What have I done wrong?

First try this:

Open an Elevated Command Prompt

Type slmgr -ipk followed by a space and then the Product Key, press Enter.

Next type slmgr -ato to activate.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Sorry guys, I have reformatted the new drive and was awaiting your reply before trying again, another wrong move!

Try removing Activation before cloning. From Elevated Command Prompt run slmgr -upk, then slmgr -rearm.

You'll then be prompted to reactivate after cloning.

That shouldn't be necessary - and I suspect that it won't change the outcome. I have seen one or two cases where this happened previously, and it was possibly caused by Intel Rapid Storage drivers kicking up.
At least one of those cases the cloning software was also Paragon, IIRC, but it was a while ago, before we had identified the possible solution of the drivers, and in the end the client reformatted and reinstalled, after MS support attempted resolution and failed.

Is that non-Genuine Blue screen lockout, as dealt with here and seen about monthly here since?

I don't believe he's locked out here. But cloning activated Win7 can have varied behavior on changed hardware and since it's HD in this case could well be SATA controller.

Older hardware may also require a BIOS update to handle 1tb HD.

No - nothing to do with lockout, which is a different case altogether.
The Intel Rapid Storage driver problem results simply in a non-genuine notification due to interference with one of the Windows services - and results in an MGADiag report with a number of file mismatch errors

I’ve re-cloned the disk, this time I used the free version of Acronis from the WD site.
So far everything seem ok.
Control Panel> System shows windows is activated with a product ID.
Hopefully everything is ok and Paragon 9 was causing the problem. If not I will be back.

There appears to be no current problem with activation on the machine - it's activated, and appears to be a student Upgrade license.
What happens if you attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate ?

I assume that your copy of Office Enterprise is also a Student Media one? - if not, it's a counterfeit

So far everything seems ok, I can only thing the original problem was caused by
Paragon.


The Office enterprise version belonged to my brother , I think it’s a corporate edition.

Will remove it to make things kosher!

If you mean you got a Welcome to Windows page, then good - please post a new MGADiag report so that we can check the result.

It may be that MGADiag managed to correct whatever minor problem was caused by the cloning - it has certain very limited repair capabilities, or it may be that your original notification was caused by a race condition as the system got itself adjusted to its new home, and a reboot or two allowed things to straighten out.
