Solved CMOS resets at startup after new CPU installed

All of my stuff is old.

Recently I got a used AMD Phenom x2 3.4GHz from the usual place for $9.00 and did the install.
Previously there was an Athlon IIx4 3 MHz in the old MSI 880-gm board. I was just tinkering
and wanting something to do and get a speed bump.

I ran the MSI system disks and all seemed well.

The last couple days I'm getting bad CMOS checksum errors. I reset the CMOS again.

I wondered if this is a symptom of simply swapping out the battery which I've never done--
maybe ever, I forget. But I have a few button batteries here. Has anyone experienced this
set of problems?

I do not overclock but the used CPU could have been. No way for me to know if it's
punked.

If the CMOS coin battery has never been replaced or hasn't been replaced in several years in that old computer, replace it.

Ok thanks. I marked this solved and would start separate topic if the problem persists. This seemed like
a logical problem area but with BIOS and other things I wanted to pose the problem for an opinion. Also the fact that the problem is intermittent gave a lot of questions.

There are multiple models of the AMD Athlon II X4 series and AMD Phenom X2 series processors.
Can you advise us what the model number of both are?

The same applies to the MSI 880GM series motherboards.
Can you advise us what the model number of yours is?

How much RAM is in that motherboard?

Is a hard disk drive(HDD) or a solid state drive(SSD) being used?

You goal seems to be to speed up your computer, so the more information we have, the better we can advise you.

I think the crisis is past with the battery change.

I have a few old motherboards-- in truth 3l old motherboards in a Win7 workgroup homenet-. This one is the MSI 880gm e41.

Here is the CPUZ screenshot with the processor details. If I was serious I'd get something new but that
would mean _all_ new-- an expenditure of which I just can't afford or really see the use since my needs
are minimal. This CPU buy was to add more video processing-- maybe speedup. But I found out what happened with using video tools was the new 3.4GHz CPU overheated (didn't shut down since I pulled the plug just monitoring the temp) on those jobs.

One other odd thing I noted: Since putting in the newer CPU there's some stalls in loading simple operating system screens-- a black screen- as if buffering on the on-board video (I haven't bought a video card since before MSI and Biostar brought out on board video chips) is trying to catch up.

In sum putting these pieces together may have been simply a bad or mistaken idea. But I follow some of the new trends for enjoyment like the derbauer Youtube segments.

Even after upgrading the processor, that replacement is still a pretty weak one.

Good luck with whatever you want to use that old computer for.

Just one other thing to add I was that thinking about. The goal of the shallow upgrade aside from just wanting to get my hands on something during this long emergency was to get more frames per second in video
editing.

I don't understand the difference in this area between processor speed and how my weak video may
be the real culprit in any progress. Probably a new question is needed. I've thought about
adding some sort of PCI slot card upgrade but never moved on it. For internet shopping and the other
simple tasks I use this homenet station on it always seemed like an extra expense which was irrelevant.

I do no gaming so FPS is just for video encoding. That is the reasoning asked about above which I simply
temporarity forgot in discussion.
