Solved Complete failure of internet connectivity

Hi all.
My son recently started having problems with his wireless internet connection.
It would connect but then say ' limited access '.
Before that , there was no problems. Unfortunately he said that he started messing around with different settings. He can't remember which ones.
I tried to connect using an ethernet cable but even that wasn't recognised.
Then I , stupidly , clicked on something which stopped the wireless connections being recognised even though on another laptop , and our mobile phones , they connected wirelessly without any problems.
I've tried to reinstall the wireless driver but that hasn't worked.
I've scanned the entire hard drive with AVG and MALWAREBYTES but nothing was detected.
He is going to college next week and I hope to fix it by then.

You didn't say, I guess this is a laptop? Did you disable wireless perhaps? Check Fn key combos.

After checking above, you can try a System Restore to at least before what you did - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html
If you can restore to a date from before all the troubles maybe that will solve the wireless issue.

Can you post a screenshot of both "Network and Sharing Center" and "Network Connections" (click Change Adapter Settings in Network and Sharing Center) please?

Yeah sorry it is a laptop.
The wifi function key is turned on.
Unfortunately , system restore isn't working
Also I have tried to connect using an Ethernet cable but it won't identify the network even though it works on other laptops

Create a manual System Restore point - same link I gave earlier.
Run devmgmt.msc - expand network adapters - right click JMicron and uninstall, also select to uninstall driver software when asked. Restart and let Windows auto install the drivers.

Open services.msc and see if these are started (not all are related to Internet connection but check them):
- Computer Browser
- DHCP Client
- DNS Client
- Network Connections
- Network Location Awareness
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
- Server
- TCP/IP Netbios helper
- Workstation

Run cmd as admin (search for it in Start Meny and right click for the option):

sfc /scannow

Just wanted to add, since you have tempered with the system a bit and not sure what has been done, perhaps best is to just Repair Install - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html (See if you can get an installation disk - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#step1, rest is much easier)

I went onto device management and expanded ' network adapters ' , it showed both the wireless and jmicron but then jmicron option just disappeared?

Before any re-installation download Linux Mint MATE, and make a bootable DVD/USB. Boot with it (no installation needed) and see if network connections (both wired and wireless) are alright . You can use Rufus to make the bootable USB, imgBurn to make the DVD.

You don't need to clean install just yet, instead try Repair Install (link in Post #5). The clean install link was for how to get an installation media (step 1).
